I Finally got around to unpacking my mew Hudson today its been a busy month.

it looks great  and runs  great. However the sound goes out when the engine goes across a Ross double cross over. I don’t see installing  a battery to prevent this from occurring referenced in the instructions.

i’ve heard of this problem before.

is there a solution for this problem?

Thanks,

Richard Gonzales

Richard,

The only engines we have that do this are the Legacy steam. For some reason they changed the software and when the voltage drops they do not automatically begin chuffing again as TMCC equipment does.

As mentioned Gun Runner John's items are our only solution. Guests noticed right away and asked to run the old TMCC engines.

Hi Richard

I would suggest using Gunrunnerjohns "Your Last Battery" with the board dongle.  The board in the tender should have the socket to plug it in.  You'll never have to change a battery again.

Here is the link...  YLB

I'll need to get on with these at some point. I just hope I don't smash up things getting into the tender when I do.

A 1-wire tether from the loco's center-rail pickup circuit to the tender's pickup circuit will give you constant continuity. I have done this on a loco or two over the years. Not difficult; just take your time. The problem is the reduced tender pickup gap. (Why would they do this? More "features" taking up room? Gah.)

Since you asked for my advice (not), I would live with the issue until the warranty is dead, then tear into the thing like you owned it. Which you do.

Do the sounds still stay dead after the gap? Yikes - another reason to avoid Legacy, if they do. Why would management sign off on this?

Regarding the warranty: if I can avoid shipping a loco back to Lionel for repair and risking shipping damage by doing a simple repair myself, I will do it myself; regarding Lionel service, I have no complaints - they have done first rate service on those locos I have sent back - 4 for smoke units (which I repair myself now) and one with a short.  I have the right tools to take a loco or tender shell off without boogering things up.

Put a battery in it and be done with it.

Thats the problem. The battery connector has not been provided. Suggestions for providing one have been posted above.

Does opening the tender void the Lionel warranty?

Only if you get caught.

No buzzers or alarms went off when I put them in my Legacy Steam...and I didn’t get covered in blue dye like a bank robber......😉

That's the problem, the locomotives stay silent until you do a reset. Thankfully John has produced a solution to the problem that didn't exist prior to Legacy. NONE of the TMCC locomotives I have ever seen exhibit this behavior.

I put the YLB 10510 Battery in my Lionel 1931800 Hudson #5416 from Pat's Trains. (I put YLB Batteries in all 30 of my steam engines.)  Only the #5416 had an issue. The sound worked fine when first installed the 10510 YLB Battery, but then the sound system would not work at all when I returned to run the engine after my ZW-L transformer was turned off once.  When I removed the YLB 10510 Battery again, the sound was fine.

I contacted Gunrunner John about this issue.  It is the first he has ever heard of this issue, but has a theory of a sound board issue possibility.

I am still diagnosing if the sound is disrupted by a normal 9-volt battery with a battery clip cable from another engine.

I was told that the YLB Battery draws a small amount of power back through the sound board to the YLB Battery, as well as the normal red wire supplying power from the center rail pick-ups.  It is this minimal draw through the sound board to the battery that may be the issue for the loss of all sound when the YLB is installed.  This issue is ONLY with my new Lionel 1931800 Hudson #5416 with the six-wheel trucks tender.  All other steam engines work perfectly with the YLB Batteries that help my steam engine sound systems continue over my Atlas O #5 Switches and double cross-overs.

I will post my findings using a normal 9-volt battery. My caregiver duties give me little time lately for my trains.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year,  John Rowlen

Thanks to everyone for your insight and advice.

I have three other Legacy steam engines  -

NYC  heavy Mikado

UP H7

SP Cab forward

All of these engines had the sound dropping out issue when crossing switches, and they had the 9v  battery connector in the tender. Installing the 9v battery solved the problem.

I knew the new NYC Hudson would not have the Legacy Memory Module. I guess we now have to install  the sensor track in our GarGraves  layouts  or it's time  to pull out that Legacy manual and enter the engine info the hard way. I had no idea that the battery back up connection would also be eliminated in a $1,300+engine. Pretty dismaying.

Enough belly aching, back to a solution. If I  purchase the #691-1415-129 9v battery connector and install a battery will this fix the problem as it did in earlier legacy steam engines? Is there room in the tender for the battery? The 5413 has a PT tender, I wonder if the smoke unit for the simulated water scoop affect will leave room for a battery?

Could somebody take a picture the port in board in order to help us who do not have a lot experience tinkering with circuit boards, assuming the port still exists on the board?

Thanks again to all for your help.

Richard

There should be plenty of room in the tender.

Lionel doesn't show that particular board but most look like this. The connector for the battery is in the upper right hand corner. Likely the only place your battery harness will fit.

RickM46, I was trying to message you about repairing smoke units especially in steam locomotives. I was wondering if I could get some information or if you could point me in the right place. We have one that that seems to produce the smell of the smoke but no visual smoke. I can gather the locomotives info in the mean time. Any help would be appreciated.

Haulingstk,  here is a link to my experiences with repairing my first Legacy Lionel smoke unit: https://ogrforum.com/...opped-working?page=1   Quite a bit of reading and pictures but nonetheless educational; even got help from the Jon Z the Lionel designer of the Legacy smoke unit.  Page 3 has a summary of all the components and how to deal with them.

For more info, you can look at laidoffsicks videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRcpFRtA6IY  and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1asUWbJtfok

The fellas on this forum were immensely helpful.
