got mine yesterday sound are good but only the "in motion" sounds. It does not have the Freight loading or unloading sounds and i'm ok with this. I plan to run multiple sound cars on a long freight consist so no sense in having redundant messages. Well detailed car and soon it will get some weathering.

What actual sounds?

I'm interested in how these sound. The sound file in the PS1 sound cars was pretty much what you would hear in a yard - a lot of clanking and banging with very little wheel/flange squeal. Not really suited to running over the road. Has Lionel improved the sound file?

Ken

Yeah, looking for random flange squeal, no banging like the last sound car. Anyone have a sound clip?

Got the new Lionel sound car today.  Looks nice.  Unfortunately due to being in between home moves I have no way to really try it.  I may try to get a few pieces of scrap track I have laying around and push it a few feet to see what it sounds like.

I ordered that exact SFRD sound refrigerator from my LHS. I should probably hear it's in over the next few days and pick it up. I'm interested to hear what it sounds like.

She said it sounds like someone locked in a car and banging a hammer to be let out.

I'd say she's pretty accurate - that's pretty much what the repeated banging noise sounds like. Better open the trunk.

(Actually, I'm not sure what that repeated banging is supposed to represent. But from now on, for me it will be someone locked in the car with a hammer or metal bar, trying to get someone to open the door.)

I haven't checked, but this appears to be the same sound car that came in the 1990(?) Santa Fe Dash-8 freight set!  I'm sure (hopeful?) that the sound system has been upgraded in the last 30 years!

Oh, they're vastly different, both in looks and sound. The 1990 car had RailSounds (no. 17202, the first "standard O" car to have RailSounds), but they were engine revs, bell and whistle sounds for the engine.  There were no car operating noises. Those engine sounds were pretty good in their day, but nothing like today's sound reproduction.

I received the PFE version the other day.  When I first powered it up I was overwhelmed by the amount of noise it made and how loud it was.  I actually read the instructions and noted that there was a MAX/MIN switch and volume control on the bottom of the car.  By changing the switch to MIN and lowering the volume substantially The sounds became more realistic.  It occasionally has flange squeal and minor banging.  With the volume set lower it does not overpower the sound of the locomotive or cars rolling along the track.  It becomes part of the "Symphony" of sounds as the train passes.   Overall, I like it.

Thanks, with that much banging no sale.

I thought maybe it’s a square wheel 😂

Wasn't the "banging" to represent a flat wheel spot?  IMHO, there doesn't seem to be much difference when you compare LIONLMAN's video post above to that of Lionel's 2016 PS1 freight sound boxcar.

https://ogrforum.com/...2016-ps-1-sound-cars

IIRC the 2016 PS-1 version's OGR forum threads/comments also complained about the high volume and overuse of the flat wheel banging that overwhelmed the wheel squeal sounds.  I could be mistaken but thought L's Ryan or Dave made a 2016 reply comment that they would see if future renditions would reduce the flat wheel spot banging;  guess that memo to the factory was lost in translation.  I like my 2016 PS-1 version, but like others feel the wheel bang/thump is overused in the soundset.  This 2019 version doesn't appear/sound any different or better ...therefore no sale and will keep eye out for the earlier Vision line sound cars.

This was a completely revamped sound set. The video really doesn't do it justice.

The "guy inside with a hammer" sound is the 'clickety-clack' - notice that the sound will repeat at roughly the same point on the rail for all 4 axles.

Suggested to use the min/max switch and volume pot to tune the car to fit your layout and your liking.

I tried the suggestions this morning. But I'm still get a hollow type banging, not like a flat spot nor clickety-clack type sound. Still like someone banging. Turning down volume too much and can't hear anything more then 2 feet coming or after 2 feet going. Just not what I was hoping for, nor expected. Maybe my expectations were higher, sorry.

Is, or was this suppose to come from a real freight car sound recording?

Dave,

Having returned the previous car unused at a loss because of a restocking fee after actually hearing some on a layout these posts have convinced me to just tell the store to cancel the order. The clickety-clack should be pretty faint, after all it isn't like the wheel sets dropping off the rails at a crossing, and the flange squeal louder. The "guy inside with a hammer" is still way too prevalent. A few cars running on a layout with light clickety-clack and random squeal would be so cool to hear, this repetitive loud banging is not for some of us.

Thanks for the update, I'm looking forward to seeing one in person.  I'm glad the video isn't representative of the real thing.

BTW, it is still possible to send one or two of the old car sound boards to get a different sound set in them?  I know this was mentioned in the past.  I have a few of those, I'd like to get a couple with slightly different sounds.

As usual! The manufacturer is going to soft pedal the errant sounds and the softies  are going to accept the lack of acceptability so they do not hurt any body’s feelings. It’s too loud, the banging sounds, get over the excuses and promise to do better!!!!

It’s not life and death, its a toy train!
