New MTH PS3 engine sometimes not working or weird electronic issues?

Try a factory reset.  Make take shell off and make sure wires are routed correctly over super caps and make sure plug firmly connected.  After that reload the flash code and sound file.  G

I have many MTH engines that run well also.  But my MTH PS3 F7's ran terribly.   Like you, sometimes they ran fine and other times they gave me fits.  I ran with the controller and with the app.  No difference.   As GGG has suggested I did factory resets and they would run fine for a while, but revert back to poor performance next session.

These were supposed to be my dream engines, but they were a nightmare.  I finally gave up and now run them in DCC mode using BlueRail and battery.  They run 100% better.

I know that's not what you want to hear... but I'm wondering if MTH did not have a quality problem with a run of these things.
