For years I have been waiting for Lionel or MTH to build a model of the UP 833.  It is the last FEF-2 in existence and it is currently housed at the Ogden UT Union station. I literally have been all over that engine when I volunteered at the station. In addition my ex-wife has 833 as her roller derby number.

So this AM I was thrilled when I got the announcement that MTH was going to build a model of the UP 833.  But the closer I looked, the sadder I got.  I pretty much accepted it was not going to been a true FEF-2. But I figured I could live with that. However it's going to be in the Greyhound colors. There are only a few pictures of the 833 out there when it was active, but I have never run across one that she isn't black in.  Secondly, the 833 is an oil burner. The MTH model is coal.

So sadly it looks like the UP 833 won't be coming my way unless MTH can fix this problem

Way bummed

Both Lionel and MTH have only one "version" of the UP FEF-3 steam locomotive model. That is the version with the Worthington SA series Feedwater System, i.e. 844/8444/844. Neither Lionel nor MTH has made a correct version with the Sellers Exhaust Steam Feedwater System, and they probably never will, regardless of which road number they put on the cab!

Sounds like an opportunity for one of the dealers to make a custom run. To be sure they’ve got the oil burner molds for that tender still…..if you can draw enough interest, I’d bet one of the dealers would pick up what you’re laying down, ……😉

Thats the rub, they are making a few oil burners in this run!  They are making an 832 as well, still grey, but its an oil burner. As HW pointed out, its not an accurate FEF-2, but make it a black oil burner and I will buy the 833

Except,,,,,,,,as I have posted previously, there are only a few UP 4-8-4 locomotives that were ever up- graded with the Worthington SA Feedwater System (I've misplaced my notes as exactly which locomotives those were, but I posted that information on the 3RS Forum related the Mr. Muffin's Lionel custom models). So far, not even Sunset/3rd Rail has produced the FEF versions with the Sellers Exhaust Steam Feedwater System.

Any photos of the two so I can see the differences?  I've always know there was a difference, but couldn't tell you what the differences are.

Do you have the book on the UP 4-8-4s by William Kratville? Otherwise go the the Utah Rails website, and search for the FEF series locomotives, There are literally hundreds of photos on the World Wide Web of UP 4-8-4s.

If Chris wants that level of accuracy, then I know a guy, ….could be a one off custom build ….to be sure the necessary parts could be 3D printed and added on, with the unnecessary parts removed. It’d be a cool project, and if done on the forum in stages, it’d be great to have you critique the build Jack, ….ain’t like the market isn’t flooded with all kinds of FEF’s …..sometimes earlier PS2 models sell for small (er) money ….

PSC has parts to build either version.  Use brass rod for “pipe” & solder.

Used those parts to rebuild this brass FEF-3, Worthington, then painted/weathered.

I took a quick peek at PSC’s catalog before commenting on having the parts 3D printed…..good to know PSC has the parts …..I’ve bought plenty of Elesco & Worthington parts from PSC. Of course, if we’re talking brass hybrid 3 rail steam, then Chris will really have my attention, ……😁
