I use Internet Explorer as my primary browser. Yesterday I started having a problem replying to threads. The reply pop screen comes up but the "Save as Draft" and "post now" buttons do not appear. I think the "upload attachments", "Tags", and "Add Poll" sections are missing too.
It wasn't all that long ago that the chat board's software vendor released code that didn't work correctly with IE.
No lectures on using a difference browser please. While IE no longer controls the market, it still holds the largest use percentage of all.

You can continue to use IE...that is your choice. However, by making that choice you will continue to hit glitches like you are having. Your decision.
You may want to contact Microsoft and see if they will offer you a fix.
Ive been down this very same road myself, I still use IE but mostly the newer browsers. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Obiously I used a different browser to make the problem report.
If nobody else experiences the problem, then the issue lies with my workstation.
It really does not matter what I do as a work around.
What is more important is the experience a new vistor has when they visit the site for the first time because they got a new train set and are thinking about entering this hobby.
I am just a participant here, so whether the board needs to be IE compatible is not up to me.
Maybe my knowledge has become dated. Web sites used to gather data about the browsers that are used for access.
Your choice, but keep in mind that you can have more than one browser on your computer. If you prefer to use IE as your "primary" browser, I guess that's fine (sure not something I would do), but use another browser--Safari, Firefox, etc.--for accessing this forum and other sites you may experience glitches with (and you will experience glitches if what I read on other train forums I frequent is any indication).
First off, let me say that I use Firefox almost exclusively, IE for some Microsoft site stuff where they choke on Firefox.
I believe that the forum software authors (which is not OGR, it's Hoopla) should make a larger effort to have IE compatibility. While as computer oriented person, issues like this aren't a mystery to me, many folks are totally baffled by something as simple as a different browser. I'm not IE fan, but it's possible to design an IE compatible site that won't experience these basic issues.
Thank you for the tips.
I am familar with CCleaner, and would also recommend it.
Whatever problem was occuring earlier seems to have resolved itself without any corrective action on my part.
No lectures on using a difference browser please.
Given that statement, I have no answer for you. You know what my "lecture" would be, and switching to Firefox IS the answer to your problem.
But if you don't want to listen...
There is no other choice IMO. Either change your browser or continue having the problems your experiencing.
I use safari on my iPad and Firefox on my laptop, never a problem.
CW, please take the advice and don't use IE if at all possible.
Ok, since Rich has made it clear that he is unconcerned with IE compatibility, I will not report any future issues.
I don't think Rich has much to do with the compatibility issues, as I previously stated, that would be the forum software authors.

Seems to me the only problem is your insistence on sticking with IE, for whatever reason. There are ample options available, and the vast majority of forum members apparently have no problem accessing the site and its features. If you have a suggestion for Hoopla (they are responsible for the technical aspects of this forum) click the button at the bottom of this and every page and send them a message.

I would have thought this would be viewed as an important aspect too, but I guess it's not. While we certainly do see a few "hi I'm new and found this site" posts, you wonder how many try to start up and run into issues and just move on and ignore this site and/or the magazine itself as a result.
As Rich has plainly stated, he can't do anything about it. Once you pick the hosting site, you basically get what you get.

I don't have a business relationship with Hoopla, OGRR does.
As I last wrote, since OGRR is unconcerned, I will not report issues in the future.
Case closed.
Give me a break, Burfle. You came on here to tell us you had a problem with Internet Exploder. You then went on to tell us you didn't want a lecture about changing browsers, even though that IS the answer to your problem!
My comment about not having an answer for you was directed at YOU, not the forum as a whole. How could I possibly answer you when you told me right in your question that you didn't want to hear the answer?

BTW, Hoopla says it will surely be supported in IE10 in the future. I just posted the question to them to bring it to mind. Obvious answer of course.
You would think being the number one browser because alot of computers come with IE already on them Hoopla would make it compatible with IE.

Well it's probably Microsoft that ie10 is not compatible with previous ie versions and they have to clear up some glitches. It could well be that Hoopla is rightfully compatible with the most used ie 7 thru 9.
Or people need to download proper updates when available.I use IE8 with no problems. I think it is the user not Hoopla or IE.Unless IE10 is not compitable.

Sorry, but it is the other way round. Microsoft, in their typical arrogant way, puts proprietary code into Internet Exploder and then expects the rest of the internet to make their web sites compatible with THEM! Sorry, that's not how the open architecture of the internet works.
This site works fine in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera, but not in Internet Exploder. So exactly who is it that has the problem?
If Internet Exploder didn't come free with every PC built, it would not have anywhere near the market share it has...which has been dropping steadily, by the way.
Ok.I understand now.I just dont understand why it only happens to certain people.
Could be this issue that PRR1950 commented about...that sometimes certain sites may set cookies (not sure what that or why) and cause IE10 to have difficulty with their site. I must say that I never had a problem with OGR and IE10 for several months. Then about a week ago, I did. I set IE10 to compatibility view, but that did not help. Then I tried to go back to IE9 but found out that Win 8 does not support IE9. Then I found the work around using the developer tools IE9 option. I thing I'll see about clearing the temp files and cookies. I have tried to use Safari in the way that I like to use IE, but it either doesn't work the same or I have not found the menu that allows me.
Well resetting cookies, etc. did nothing. But I reset the IE10 compatibility to no compatibility settings. Just IE10 alone...and now everything works well.
I did read somewhere this interesting bug with IE10 which has been fixed I guess...
"this is actually something that has been reported as a bug and fixed in our most recent releases. The issue was that IE10 is being recognized as IE1, which does not pass our browser check"
so that may be why it said I needed to update to IE9 even though I was beyond that version.
may be time to take a giant step backwards...

BTW, I just had an issue with Adobe Flash on IE10 preventing me from uploading an attachment. Most of the google help was no help. I found if I turned off ActiveX Filtering under Tools-Safety, the problem went away.
FYI
The task of cross-browser coding can be daunting for site developers. Microsoft's IE does require additional work, whereas the others will work with similar coding. Most sites will work with IE9 and the others now. Microsoft's "proprietary" coding is provided through developer tools. So, not that proprietary.
I recently joined the forum and have encountered no issues with IE9, no security disabled.
Sites that only develop for the others are taking a less expensive approach and limiting their exposure.
I have found that Windows users that install other browsers have issues. They don't play well together. You see continous "bug" fixes coming from Mozilla that are not security related.
The coding for IE10 is still a work in progress as some have discovered.
If you use IE9 or Firefox or Safari one should be ok on most sites. Any problems encountered are most likely a local machine issue.
BTW, Hoopla says it will surely be supported in IE10 in the future. I just posted the question to them to bring it to mind. Obvious answer of course.
cjack,
And there is the answer. A web hosting provider that is not coding said site to a standard. For you to hack into the identity string so that a site will work right is unacceptable. IE9 and IE 10 heavily lean toward HTML 5.0 compliance, but unless the provider codes said site to said standard..you run into issues. IE 10 has been out there in since early 2011 in Alpha, Beta and released to the masses in Oct 2012 in the form of Windows 8, yet Hoopla STILL isn't supporting the browser. Any browser, from any manufacturer should work if the site gave a darn about adhering to HTML standards.
You would think being the number one browser because alot of computers come with IE already on them Hoopla would make it compatible with IE.

Rich,
I have to disagree. IE has no more "proprietary code" than Chrome or Safari. All have rendering engines that are suppose to render HTML based on a standard. IE 9 and 10 have support for CCS3 and HTML5 using the Trident engine. The four browsers you named above all use webkit (Firefox uses Gecko with webkit elements for Javascript). So it appears Hoppla is coding the site to "enhance" the webkit rendering engine and not true HTML 5 standards. Heck even Microsoft posted a blog post (Nov 2012) that details how to adapt your Webkit optimized site to IE10. They even state "Even better, the vast majority of changes you’ll make will make your site more compliant to the HTML5 standards!" Since when does one code a site to a rendering engine? Microsoft in this case is not at all bending anyone to IE standards, but HTML5 standards.
Bottom line...IE is a viable browser and if users have issues I think an attempt should be made to support them not simply steer them away from using IE.
Good answer. I have little patience for answers that don't answer the question, but try to change the subject by trying to sell you a different product (browser).
Well, I couldn't stand it. I installed IE10 pre-release for Windows 7. I was using IE9 and had no issues with this site.
Now, with IE10, my surfing is faster and this forum site works fine.
If you have IE8 or older, it's time to move on to something current. It may also be a good idea to have your computer serviced.
I have not experienced the problem you mentioned with this forum, but I've had similar IE problems on other websites, most notably Southwest Airlines.
As I found out with Southwest Airlines, MS IE was not at fault when I couldn't connect properly to their site. Instead, some "cookie" that they had earlier sent to my PC prevented me from accessing their site the way I tried.
Not trying to venture too far off track here, but I have a similar issue with another airline website. Did your actions resolve the probelm with SWA? Or not?
Sure did.
I just got a headache!!
