As a young lad under five in the mid 1940's, I saw my first Lionel standard gauge set in my neighbor's apartment. It was the green #9 with the three matching cars, and I distinctly remember the longitudinal seats in the coaches when a roof was removed. It seemed so HUGE and it is forever imprinted on my memory! Of course at the time, I knew nothing about the maker or the gauge, just that it was BIG and IMPRESSIVE!
