so i have a lionel o27 set from 1980, its the 6-8900 FARR #1 set. ive posted before about this locomotive, but the smoke unit still is emitting a red glow whenever i run it, which isnt normal and can start a fire. ive also looked everywhere but cant find a new smoke unit for it. i have a new smoke unit for the FARR #2 6-8002, but i dont think itll work the same. does anyone know where i can find a new smoke unit for the 6-8900 locomotive? its one of my favorite locomotives and i would just love it if i could get a new unit, so any help is appreciated

It should just be a regular "puffer" liquid smoke element: 8141-55. You probably also need the lid 2029-16 since it is likely melted and maybe the packing 671-212. As you indicate, the scale Hudson smoke unit is a different style, but uses essentially the same element. Note that the fiberglass sleeve 8141-56 is contraindicated.

big thanks for part numbers, now i just need to get payed so i can buy the new parts for the unit
I may be wrong but I highly doubt it is a 8141-55 smoke unit. I think this was used mostly in cheaper 2-4-2 locos. The Lionel parts manual does not show the 6-8900. It only gives reference to it with link to pages that don't link up to a 4-6-4 Hudson. There is a reference to the 6-8603 Hudson from 2 years earlier. I would think the smoke unit would be more like it. That engine has a 8602-42 smoke unit. Can't confirm it without seeing your smoke unit. Can you take the boiler shell off and show us a photo of the smoke unit on the engine?

I have new heaters and new complete original smoke units for that engine. If interested, drop a email.
Ok so i popped the lid off the unit and the pac man thing (idk what its called) is all charred and blackened. This might be part of the problem, but i believe "Uberstationmeister" about it being in the resistor. I have all the parts up on ebay, so im gonna try to do that and see if it works, and will post an update when it all arrives and gets put together
@Überstationmeister posted:There is little to doubt and barely a need to confirm visually. Member "bennett V" has a traditional engine with a malfunctioning liquid smoke resistor element. He needs to get a new resistor.
The liquid type resistor is Lionel part 8141-55. He might the plastic cover too, since his is likely melted from the heat. That is Lionel part 2029-16, used on all "bowl" style liquid units. If the lining is too burnt, he might need it. The lining is Lionel part 671-212, used in all smoke units of the bowl style.
The entire unit is 8610-42, but it is unlikely that a complete replacement would be needed.
My bad. I have my numbers mixed up and was thinking of the 8141-? smoke unit that was used in the 2-4-2 scout engines.
