I looked at them and it's just poor lighting. Other views of them show that they are gray.

thanks steve, altho,i do like the idea that they would be black,,,,,does anybody know why,af painted the trucks gray in the first place,,,,was it just to be different and highlight the flex trucks?,thanks terry
This is what confuses me. Some 200 series cars come with grey Lionel trucks.200 series car with grey trucks. Did Lionel make them this way for a couple of years. I doubt MTH is wrong.
From the Greenberg Flyer Wide Gauge book, The earliest Flyer freight cars were Lionel 1x cars with Flyer stamped on the bottom and had the black flex truck starting in 1925, in 1927, they came out with their own designs but continued with black trucks. The gray trucks started about 1928. Being as Flyer left the Lionel graphics on the early cars, a quick truck swap on a Lionel 14, 13, 12 or 17 would give you a decent fake early car.

Except that the trucks were riveted.
I have 1. I think it is the red coal car. They all appeared in 1 catalogue. Why did they do it like that?
