I just love that German whistle sound on their locomotives!! and the sync'ed puffing smoke WOW!!

This will be one awesome engine.

Is it 3 rail compatable?

All new MTH Premier Steam are made with the 'PROTO 3-2' Feature [Where the Engine will switch from 3-Rail to 2-Rail or Vise-Versa], but you choose from Scale or Hi-Rail Wheels..

also will mth have the  DR(Deutsche Reich) passenger cars to go along with those locomotives??

DR was also used by the DDR (East Germany) in the post war period, until the reunification of the two Germanys.  DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn - German Federal Railway) was used by Western Germany.  DB coaches would be appropiate for the two black engines offered, not DR.

Please don't buy the passenger cars but instead get these:

http://www.spur-0-kaufhaus.de/shop/article_s14140/Bausatz%2C-Fad-167%2C-Ep.-4.html?sessid=rzDxs4A5y7ATbtLlLqkMg45y1vk6CNgcFC5jE0te0babdtMFMpXmo7PAU4mTRxx1&shop_param=cid%3D18566%26aid%3Ds14140%26

Also available in RTR but double the price. Only problem is that you really have to buy lots of them and then two BR44 locmomotives: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJIDqW0Ot6U

@MikeTG: Yes, I've seen the video of your very nice layout. Unfortunately I'm a bit restricted with my bookshelf layout at the moment .

The DB Hoppers from Schnellenkamp are scale 1:45, I've measured one and it's a bit under 26cm which would be 11.7 meters. Prototype says 11.5 meters: http://www.dybas.de/dybas/gw/gw_f_1/g167.html

Better watch out with that BR18 because the maximum speed for the hopper cars is 80 km/h

Thanks for the info I was an exchange student in both Germanies before the wall came down and didn't know DR was specific for the DDR!!

Thanks for the clarification.

I didn't know at the time how fortunate I was to ride the trains pulled by those wonderful steamers. I am so looking forward to the release of that locomotive with that sound system. I know it's going to cost me but I will be saving up for it and I will consider it a jewel in the crown of what I have not to mention the sentiment behind it.

When I was over there I did go into hobby shops but everything I saw was G-Scale or HO and the electrical systems were not compatible with American systems

My how things have changed. Even though the Commies kept their "subjects" down I saw some great outdoor and indoor layouts in both GDR and DDR not to mention the British are awesome too!!!

Someone above took issue with my "very few US 2-10-0's" comment, and, to be sure,

there were some around - but mainly because the US is/was an enormous country,

compared to most. By "enormous" I mean size multiplied by population multiplied

by wealth per citizen; nowhere else had all three in such abundance. So, we had locomotives all over the place - but the 2-10-0 was still a relatively uncommon wheel

arrangement. The other "ten-feet" locos - 2-10-4, 2-10-2, etc - were not 2-10-0's,

by definition. So I respectfully stand by my statement.

Looking around on the internet, it seems I was wrong and the BR44 was also regularly used in passenger service.

There's also an overload of BR44 pictures at  http://www.bahnbilder.de/name/...alfotografie/48.html

but I think most of these with passenger cars are after the BR44 already was out of service. My best (affordable) guess for cars would be Lenz umbauwagen or the Rivarossi DB coaches mentioned earlier (those are plain but 250 USD cheaper).

A quick reheat of this thread.

Part 1 of the TV show "Eisenbahn Romantik" is online and we can see a very exuberant Mike Wolf proudly showing the BR44 and the German Crocodile.

The show, in German, show again a tremendous amount of new items, mostly HO, but well worth watching for anyone interested in model trains in general...for the MTH segment jump to 23 minutes (just after the **** station)

Nurnberg Toy Fair part 1

Part 2 was just on tonight on TV, so it should be online in the coming week.
