Just installed a WFI unit to my TIU (ver L) and have loaded version 5 software updates to both the TIU and Remote.  I am (initially) using the MTH wireless channel and I installed the control software to an iPad.

Am I correct, that I must (re-) add all the engines that I wish to run on my layout to the iPad controller app?

This is what I did for my first attempt at running an engine with the software app.  The diesel went through a startup sequence and I dialed in a speed .. very cool.  Sounded the horn ... great.  Then, I tried to reverse the direction by selecting the R in the left arrow head, but the engine continued to run forward, and the speedometer went to zero.  At this point, the engine was non-responsive to any commands and I had to turn the power off on the transformer to stop the engine.  I noticed that the engine was listed in the "inactive" category which could explain the issue.   Any idea why the loco was listed as inactive and why it was no longer responsive to commands after I selected the "R" (for reverse)?

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

That's correct. Each smart device on which the app is installed is just like an additional DCS Remote.

A few questions:

  • Is your DCS App at version 1.1 and have you updated your WIU to firmware 1.1? If both the app and the WIU are not at version 1.1, there will be problems.
  • Has the problem occurred more than once? If so, was it on the same place on the layout for each occurrence?
  • Can you duplicate the problem on the same spot on the layout using the DCS Remote?

okay, I have updated the firmware to 1.1.  I have test 3 locomotives: two PS2s and one PS3 (upgrade).  The two PS2s worked just fine using the wifi controller.  The PS3 upgrade (Amtrak Genesis Diesel) did not.  It will only go forward.  I tried it on two different loop and it would only go in one direction, whereas, when the other two locos where moving forward and I pressed the R arrow, the loco slowed to zero speed and when I dialed in a speed it went in reverse.

I changed to my home network and am using an iPad to control the locomotives.  When I use the traditional remote handheld controller, the Amtrak engine works just fine.

Any idea what could be causing this problem?

How do you check the firmware version on the wi fi and how do you update it.

I just bought the wifi and I am unable to add engines.  It is an older TIU.

When I initially set it up the TIU light on the wifi unit continued to blink. The other 2 lights stayed on. When I tried to add an engine it would not add.  Now when I turn power on to the track the engine sound comes on and the horn or whistle continue to beep.  Ive also lost control with the remote.

Amtrack5899.  Unfortunately for me this is perishable knowledge.  I was successful in updating the TIU firmware, but had to VERY carefully follow the steps in Barry's book.  If you don't have a copy, you should get one.  When I dealt with this issue awhile back I had an original TIU and a newer one (I believe it is refereed to as Rev L).  I was able to update both of them.  But, I must defer to others on this board who are much more knowledgeable than i am for sepecific advise and console for the issue that you are addressing.  Good Luck, Tom

I just connected the WFI today.

Yesterday I have my TIU and remote upgraded to V 5.

I upgraded to WFI to V1.1

The WFI can not find the TIU. I used the recommended adapter Sabrent  CB-DB9P.

I used the same adapter yesterday to connect to my PC and upgrade the TIU and remote.

Can anyone give an idea of what else to do. And yes the TIU have power.

I upgraded my  H TIU to version 5. When I initially set up the WIU I was able to run two engines with the free wi Fi app. After powering down I was unable to activate or add engines.

The WIU was 1.0.

We updated the firmware to version 1.1.

The error message indicates that it can't find the TIU-

check cable connections.

The TIU pink light ,WIFi blue light and yellow power light on the WIU are all on steady.

I loosened up the screws under the TIU to assure the plastic case was not interfering with the 9 pin adaptor.

What do I check next.

The engines do run with the remote.

When you update the WiFi firmware you never really know if you've done it correctly. I don't understand how the units can continually be sold when the firmware update hasn't been performed yet. Shouldn't they go back to MTH for the upgrade before being sold? My system still doesn't work correctly despite the firmware update I performed. I have an older TIU. I always have to unplug the cable to the WiFi unit and re-start because engines always become inactive.

The hobby stores selling the WIU should be updating them for free.  Really sad that so many of you are having issue when it's such a good system.

How do you know what app version you have?

TIU version 5.0

WIU firmware version  1.1.

app version ???

i just purchased the $4.99 app. It didn't indicate what version. I thought they all had to be the same and that the latest version was 1.1. for the WIU firmware and 5.0 for the TIU.

I am finally able to run trains on 1 wi Fi.

getting ready to buy 2 more WIU's and give super TIU mode a try.

Identifying the installed firmware version on the WIU is a bit cryptic but easy to do. Please check out the image below:

The Status page will display the firmware installed on the WIU. Look for the portion I highlighted in red to identify the version installed.

I experienced very similar issues when I experimented with the WIU. I found that most of these problems have to do with how (and sometimes when) the TIU is powered.  It is strongly suggested to power the TIU with the AUX power port which should help with many of the communication drop out problems between the WIU  and the TIU.
