Hello all. My name is Pete. I thought I would introduce myself first. I model railroad in both O and G. Mostly O though. I am literally starting over with O. I have a modest set on the floor of my basement right now that I am working on as we speak. Not much really. Just an MTH Premier SD70Ace and 5 modern Lionel auto carrier cars from various railroads. ( I preferred the Lionel versions to the MTH because they are more true to scale). Anyway, I also have a modern tank car. Additionally, I have an Amtrak Surf Liner set, which has the F59 locomotive and three "Super Liner" cars. That's really all I have thus far. Today, I plan on purchasing the MTH DCS Premier ES44AC. Nice locomotive with many of the typical MTH features. Although not prototypical as far as a real railroad mark, it does look real nice either by itself with cars in tow or a lash up.

I'm sure many in here have extensive layouts and I am most interested in talking with everyone about what they have or would like to have. I favor MTH over Lionel, but honestly, they both have really nice features that make decisions sometimes rather difficult. I also prefer modern era versus older type railroads. Though I have nothing but the greatest respect for the steam era whether real or scale.

If anyone has any questions of me, please feel free to ask away. I love railroading and anything to do with trains.

Thanks, Pete

Yes. One day in the 24th century perhaps......LOL

Just kidding. Right now, I cannot really do much of anything to grand because the basement is going to be re done in the not so distant future. Once that is accomplished, I will build my empire. I hope. God willing.

Thanks for asking

Thank you sir. I look forward to talking with everyone here. Thus far, I am impressed and I see I can learn allot from many in here with far more experience then I have. That plus the fact I simply love this hobby makes life really great for me personally.

Once again, thank you sir.

Pete

Pete welcome to the hobby. Just a few things to consider in the future. 1) make a dedicated area for your trains. @) Set a budget. 3) NO duck unders if possible.4) Depending on your space don't try to model too much in your area.Lots of maintenance can spoil your effort to enjoy the hobby.I have a 11' X20' around the wall layout with a duck under and 3' table width and it works great for me as I can easily reach everything. I copied a two track simple layout from the magazine and its working for me. I like to watch trains run  with maybe some switching at 3 spurs.I like the DRGW and S.P

I don't know the overall size, present conditions, or future empire plans, but.. Do you keep something under the track(plywood?) to insulate it from a cool basement floor? Especially important on one with cement, tile on cement and/or high humidity. Otherwise, "invisible", repetitive condensation might  creep in, and bite you.

A sheet of plywood could likely also get reused in eventually building your "elevated" empire too. Maybe just a "lift & set" addition if your sly enough. Even the real thin stuff can often be recycled in scenery, and laying of track.
