Legacy Station just posted a video of the pilot version. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/H-iIoymA2T8
Please post is photo when anyone’s arrives, please?
Legacy Station also just posted a video of the '49er fantasy scheme. I still don't like it, but I'll admit it looks much better than it did in the catalog.
If someone has a video of the 3985 version, may we see it please?
Looks like the gray on the Steam Chest is pretty bright. Doesn’t look like the darker gun metal on the earlier release. Just say’n
I did not see any smoke come out of the Whistle Steam Effect.
No alternating puff from the smoke stack (alternating front and rear flu puffs) like on the Vision Line Big Boy.

If Lionel did that they would have to have two smoke units for the stack and they would also have to raise the prices.
That 49’er is 🤮. I like most of the fantasy schemes but that is not for me
That 49er looks better in real life than in catalog art, but still not for me. However I am glad it sounds like it proved popular with Lionel.

I have 3717 on order representing the renumbering of greyhound Challenger 3984 from passenger to freight service with the black paint scheme.

Which all the folks who engineer trains said was incorrect anyways.

True, but it sure looks cool at slow speed with the VL-BB.
If it sells well good for Lionel. But I can't stand fantasy paint schemes like this.
Some of the fantasy paint schemes look better than others, however this one is certainly , at least IMO. It's just too garish for me.
With BTO, if it didn't sell well enough it wouldn't have been made. We can sit here and say how ugly it is but in the end they must of had enough interest to have them produced. Not my cup of tea either but more power to them if they can sell them.
Marty, I don't mind them selling them, I just think they look like they were beat with an ugly stick!

Only an engine a mother could love.

I asked... it was one of the most popular challengers.
It looks WAY BETTER than i thought it would!
The '49er scheme on the ES44 was also very popular i heard...
Is it me or is that the same, awful grey paint from the Niagara run?

Upon review, that might not be the case. I think the quirky paint on the Niagara was silver, not grey....IIRC.

Yea, what John said. If you left it somewhere, came back a day later, there would be 2.
Here is the video of 3985.
Brian, I didn't notice whistle steam. Thanks, Jim
Great Engine. I am mixed on the gray color. It looks like the same color on the latest released Legacy Berkshires. Bummer.
Thank you you for posting a video.
Whistle steam works better over time. We verified it was working after I shut off video because I did not see much come out either.
This was a brand new loco first run right out of box so it did not have time to really get going.
My OCD eyes keep being drawn to the bad track joint on the S gauge track, about four inches from the end of the Standard gauge track. Hopefully they will fix that.
Thanks Brian, I noticed it working on the what if version on your other video
The 3985 looks to be light graphite to me. I cant see in flesh, but from video looks like it has some cast to the color.

Sorry Bob but the 49er challenger is hideous and Lionel could not even get the 49er brown correct!
Dave
All the videos I have seen don't have the articulated sounds. Did they really leave out the articulation in the sound set? How did that get out the door?
I didnt pre order one. I wanted to see it first. It looks way better than i thought it would!
I have several challengers i would choose before this one... but it keeps growing on me!

I was thinking the same thing.
Yeah, I will be contacting Lionel if they do not see this post and offer a remedy the articulation missing is unacceptable for the price of this engine. Beautiful or not you run this next to the Bigboy and will just not sound right.

Wow. I just noticed the same thing. Compared to the previous release and the Big Boy its very noticeable. Hopefully Lionel chimes in.
anyone seen a greyhound?

The videos I've seen (including the one posted above in this thread) show the siderods of the front and rear driver sets in perfect sync. In this case, the chuffs would also be in perfect sync so a non-articulated sound set would be correct. Maybe Lionel held them in N.C. so they could adjust the drivers to match the sound set. Or maybe not.
I know for sure there are no new Lionel locomotives in my future.
