I picked up a new in the box Williams GS4 steam engine for my grandson for Christmas. Has been sitting for a few years on the shelf at the local hobby shop. It has only been run for a few laps around the layout as we are finding that it is binding and getting stuck every once in a while. When you turn by hand the flywheel that sticks out the back of the cab you feel it lock up and get stuck so it does not turn. What am I looking for to fix this? can not see anything in the running gear that is a problem. Sometimes it runs around the track just fine. Any suggestions???

sometimes the gearbox cover plate gets loose and causes jammed gears you should take the gearbox apart clean out all the old grease and inspect the gears totally after cleaning for wear chipped or worn teeth and such! if you don't find anything but old caked crease clean ALL the old caked great out and re lube with Thick n tacky great really good lubricant!

Thanks for the suggestions. Got the engine home and looked at it under a good light in more detail and discovered that the screws holding the drive rod to the wheels on one side were all loose. One had wound itself out so that it was rubbing and catching the running gear. Was able to tighten them all up and the steamer is running well now. Guess they forgot to tighten one side at the factory.

As with all Williams engines have several others GG1's and several diesels it does not take much power to get these flying along the track. Wish they would gear their engines of all types lower. I got one of the new 44 ton switcher engines, but as it is geared so high it is not much use for switching. All my fleet of Williams have been very reliable running many hours at train shows. And nicely detailed the newer engines really look great.

As for the speed issue theres lots of info here about wiring duel motors williams in series, and other options of changing the control board to lower the jack-rabbit speeds if you care to do that.
