hello ogr form - new member here. getting back into the hobby after a long time. from what I have read so far I don't intend to open a can of worms on mth vs lionel, simply wanting to know which system is easiest/most cost effective for getting a 4x8 layout up and running...thanks in advance!

On a 4x8 layout they will both be easy to implement. Base your decision on the type of trains you want ro run.

Ultimately, it depends on what you like. If you are primarily looking at Lionel Legacy equipment, then Legacy. If you are looking at MTH Premier or RailKing, MTH. IMHO you will have more choice with MTH. Lionel's lower end sets come with Lionchief or Lionchief+ and are not compatible with Legacy.
