I had the newer gp30 running for about 10 15 minutes. Then it stopped and started making this noise. Turn the smoke unit off and she runs good. Is there something I should look for under the shell? Or should I just get a new smoke unit?

It's likely a shorted wire and not actually the smoke unit. I'd be looking for pinched wires under the shell.
I pulled the shell. Went through the wires didnβt see any that were pinched or kinked. I called Lionel who said it sounded like the smoke unit. They gave me a part number CS-6101434210-P. But it is unavailable on the website. Are there other outlets to check for a smoke unit? Would replacing the wires with the molex connectors be worth a try? Or should i just hunt a smoke unit?
Im sure its out of warranty by now, maybe @gunrunnerjohn could fix it?
I read thru all these 'non-smoking' posts, its interesting how this one issue bugs us more than any other!!!
My experience is that smoke is one of the most maintenance intensive parts of model trains. It's also one of the cooler features, so I live with the complications.
The amount of money spent by Lionel on smoke warranties must be astounding. Obviously, all of us users must pay for this through product price increases. Not everybody wants to make this a routine maintenance item. The only answer is donβt run with smoke which weβve already paid the increased price for on an advanced feature or buy a different product.
