I got my Train Collectors Quarterly this week and noticed some great contributions from our fellow forum members. The TCQ cover had a beautiful photo of tinplate trains and accessories by Robert S. Butler. Also, there was a great article by Rob English inside on the 260e. This was part 2, so I had to pull my past TCQ to read the part 1 that I missed.

Thanks for the compliments guys.  I took pictures of the diorama from various angles and elevations and sent the one I thought was the best. One always sends an editor more than he/she can use so that they have choices with respect to editing. 

  The cover size/shape does put constraints on what can be shown. I think the editor did a great job of choosing the section of the image that had the most impact for a front cover.  Based on the description of the picture on the inside page it would appear he tried a couple of crops and wrote the text for an earlier crop since he mentions three Ives cars when there are only two in the picture.  

  Attached is one of the other views I took of the diorama. As you can see, there really were three Ives boxcars in the background.

Maybe start with the lower priced electrics first. They seem to be the easiest to find. Then move on to the more premium priced sets.

You are right Rob, it would be too much to cover. I was more thinking to variations made for specific sets. For example i have a 4692 with a 4693 tender and the trucks are nickeled so maybe it has been made to match with a specific set of passenger cars but I don't know more. 

Some years ago on the forum a very interesting subject on AF steam engines was discussed.  AF is very attractive to collect and there is great specialised collectors here who always offer a great selection of models to discover.    Daniel

Steve, an interesting idea. Maybe 1 article for catalogued set, and 1 for variations, shopworn and uncatalogued sets?

Daniel... still too much! The variations on the 4689X steam are seemingly endless, even considering the limited years of production. I will put some thought to this... maybe more of a dating guide with the catalogued differences rather than specific variations by set....Hmmm.
