Check these out.  I bought some for my layout and I'm very pleased with them.  Dept 56 bare branch trees in regular and birch style.  The bases are white and there is a touch of white paint on them for snow but its nothing a quick spray paint or brown acrylic paint wouldn't fix!  I was going to put foliage on them but I'm really kinda liking the bare branch look.  They are wire so you can bend each and every branch to suit your tastes.  This would be really helpful when putting a tree right next to a building or train line as you can set the branches to clear anything!

Well, like Alan I googled Dept 56 bare branch trees, also just trees, bare of otherwise, and got lots and lots of suppliers.  Not sure what you mean but there certainly are a lot available.  Many types, styles, even lit up for Christmas.  they aren't quite what I want, but they are nice particularly for holiday layouts.  Thanks

Here is what I found, these would be a great "base" to start from.

Yes Jdaddy those are the ones!  I had links to the products at Amazon but the links needed to be removed due to a violation of use of the forum.  I understood completely!  But those are them, and I got them for about $16 or $17 bucks a set from Amazon and I'm happy with them as a starting point!

I'm going to paint the bases and snow on them and see about foliating them.

These were the trees I ordered. A pack of six for $9.99.  The item dimensions are 9.75 x 7.5 x 12.  I interpret these as the box dimensions, with the tallest tree about 8 to 9".  I'll let everyone know.

Some mottled gray paint (I now use Rustoloum Soft Iron) on the trunks, followed with Super Sage for the fine branch detail and then Noch leaves and they should look pretty good.

Thanks again for the tip

John I like these. Add some Woodland Scenic Foliage to this and they would look pretty cool. Yellow would look good too for Aspen trees in the fall.
