I recently bought a NKP 765 off of a guy on eBay. He test ran the engine before he shipped it and it ran great. I set up some track this morning and put the engine on. When I applied power to the track the engine lights all lit up and the bell sounded and it just sat there making air compressor noises. I can’t add the engine on my dcs system. When I do it says engine not found. I’m taking it to my local hobby shop tomorrow and going to have them look at it but can anyone on here maybe point me in a direction on what’s going on with it?

We need the part number to know what should be inside.
You need to charge the internal battery to run it. It won't add either if the battery is dead.
Engineer Joe, 20-3032-1 is the part number of the locomotive.
So I need a conventional transformer to run this engine?
PS-1 runs on variable voltage. Follow the reset procedure in the instruction manual. Also, get a BCR (some folks use a fresh rechargeable battery instead).
Also, some original Protosounds locomotives will not run on chopped-wave output transformers. (I have one like this.)
And some Protosounds locomotives require you set the transformer to less than 10 volts when first powering it up before you hit the direction button to take it out of reset. So read your manual to make sure of the operation requirements for your locomotive.
I have replaced the batteries in most of my PS1 locomotives with BCRs, a capacitor electrical storage circuit made to look like a 9-volt battery. If you decide not to go that route, make sure the battery is the green battery, not the original white battery, inside that locomotive.
I was at my local hobby shop this morning and the engine is ps1. Next question is where can I get an upgrade to ps3 for this engine? I’m from about 40 mins north of Pittsburgh Pa. Mth doesn’t do the upgrade program.

What a great location for trains! I don't know if he does this kind of work, but I suggest asking Dave Minarik at Mercer Junction.
There are also lots of threads on here regarding converting from PS1 to PS3. (Personally, I like the fact that you can get PS1 engines so relatively inexpensively, so I just run them as they are.)
The upgrade, with labor, will run about $300. Several folks on this forum can also the upgrade, but obviously shipping would add to the cost.
