I want an MKT steam engine to pull freight.  I know that MKT used the Mikado 2-8-2 and the Pacific 4-6-2.  I prefer the Mikado.  Alco or F-3 diesel would be ok, but they are mostly Texas Special with passenger connotations.  I want freight.  I have some great MKT freight rolling stock including a caboose.

How difficult would it be for me to buy a Mikado of different livery and repaint it to the MKT livery.  I know MKT sported the red and white logo on the tender, which I cannot duplicate, so must be able to buy the decal.  Take me to school!

You also need to consider how accurate the locomotive itself to be repainted is and if that's important to you or not.  Without knowing anything regarding MKT's steam roster, there might be key spotting details such as location & size of the sand dome(s), number boards, headlight, smokestack, air compressors, cab style, feedwater heaters, etc that might make the engine accurate for whichever railroad the model came in but not be accurate for the MKT itself.

First, use the Internet - where you are now - to search for MKT steam images.

Just cruise around. Take your time. I just did a very quick search and found images of

a MKT Pacific type that, while it wasn't a USRA design, could be emulated using any

of the available USRA Light Pacific models that have come from Lionel, K-line,

Weaver and MTH. K-line even offered a high-quality sub-scale (1:58) Pacific that was well-made and detailed, and geared for good running. Da Bay is the place to look.

Second, you do not have to paint the loco, unless you buy one in an odd color. Don't do that. When (and if) you locate the decals, all you have to do is remove the existing

numbers/letters and apply the Katy items.

Third, fingernail polish can remove some lettering, but not all. Fine "sanding film"

(hobby sandpaper - Hobby Lobby has it) can be used to gently wear the lettering off

without affecting the paint too much, if at all. Overspray can also work. The new decals and the flat (Dullcote) overspray will bring it (the finish) back to consistency.

A black steamer is a black steamer; you do not have to paint it black - again.

There - the basics. Re-decorating a black-painted, brass or die-cast model steamer is one of the easiest modeling things that you can do. And I'm not talking about a so-so job; these methods can yield very nice results. I know.

Cruise the Internet and auction sites for the engine, photos and the decals.

You also stated an early diesel may be OK, As far as some early freight diesels available,

MTH made an as delivered GP7 in the red with white stripe scheme. Hard to find.  (Not sure if stripes were white or yellow when delivered.)

MTH also made a Baldwin AS16 in the same scheme, yellow stripe, (MKT never owned the 6 axle model, they did own the 4 axle unit!).( I have a set of these, nice looking and great puller).

I’m like you, seems everyone makes the popular F3, F7 in the un protipical Texas Special scheme. Also, passenger Alco PA’s are available in MKT red/silver by many makers builders.
