I'd love one & I'd buy one, and it seems to fit the original mission of the Vision Line.  However, I'm not sure how many layouts would be able to support it.  Even on the layout I'm designing for my basement I'd only have one spot with 90 degrees of O-72 on the main line (O-81 or greater elsewhere), and I'd worry about clearances.

Though there's a good N&W contingent among us, it's still a niche item, & it wouldn't come cheap, especially as a Vision Line.  Pretty sure that would break the $3k barrier, easy.  LEGACY may be a more likely option.  That or I may eventually try to find a second hand 3rd Rail one from a few years ago.

I have the MTH C&O Turbine......I want a N&W Jawn....but cost will be the biggest factor.

Dave I had exchanged eMails with one of the MTH VPs about making a 2300 going back to 2007.  My thinking was they already had "Span Bolster" model experience.

Dave do you have any guess the cost of tooling to make a plastic and/or die cast 2300?  My guess would be north of $300,000.00.  At say $2000.00 a copy one would have to sell 150 just to break even on the tooling cost.

I have the 3rd Rail brass version and cannot think of another one in O scale. Sorry, can't see Lionel making this model as no doubt they will think that 3rd Rail has pre-empted them and brand new tooling would cost a mint.

If you want to wish for a turbine, and are none too particular about whether or not it's coal-fired steam (!), best hope that Lionel does the UP Veranda in Vision Line. However I (and others) have asked them about this and they were not encouraging.

P.S. The 3rd Rail version is one of if not the best of recent 3rd Rail offerings so if you want a Jawn Henry look for one of theirs or hope for a re-issue.

I would be willing to bet that even if Lionel were to produce this model in the Legacy or Vision line, it would be even more expensive than the current Sunset/3rd Rail model.

I am aware of the 3rd Rail model....and yes a Lionel model might be the same price. But at 70 made the 3rd Rail model will never be 'dumped'.......a Lionel model manufactured in much larger numbers could, like my C&O Turbine, be dumped by someone at a later date. My Chessie Turbine was under $400 2nd hand....I can justify that.

If Lionel were to make the Jawn Henry, it would be BTO and unlikely to be dumped.

The MTH C&O turbine hung around at dealers for a very long time.  I think it took about 3 years for my LHS to unload theirs.

My guess is the C&O Turbines would have sold much better if MTH had produced a matching passenger set with Chessie lettered Vista Domes and Domed observation car. It is a very cool and unique engine. Though the MTH cars might not be the rivet counters cup of tea, they would have made the engine much more desirable.

For sure many Lionel guys with the C&O Streamlined Hudson would have purchased the passenger cars to run as well.

Actually MTH did make the "Chessie" matching passenger set(s) 20-6549 & 20-6649.  But prototypically these cars and engine never met.

Really ?!  A 3000 dollar boat anchor?

No offense but the Jawn Henry is not the most good looking locomotive out there. Not sure there is a market here.

If I had 3 k to spend on a locomotive can we at least look at something more appealing? More monumental?

say maybe the PRR S1 Duplex?

I have her too........but again at a huge discount because she was a conventional only brass model......and picked up cheap considering......doubt it will ever happen with Jawn.

Great photo btw

I would buy it in Legacy if made.

What would Legacy (TMCC II) do in this model that TMCC does NOT?

Lionel could include random break-down sequences with special sound effects. Force the operator to troubleshoot and repair the defect before allowing the unit to run again. Include an internal timer that keeps the unit out of service for days or weeks. That would make it much more prototypical .

BTW, Dad always said "It was the best Stationary boiler he had ever worked on".

I think they already have that sound chip from the Break Down B unit!

But honestly this would be really cool to own in Legacy, I'm just not sure it would be a HOT seller.

Broken feedwater pump, flashed over generator, and finally broken turbine!

"If Sunset already made it (we have one) why would one desire another from Lionel???"

So? Certainly this needs to be taken into consideration when scheduling any production of any item - is the market there? - but 3rd rail having "done it" does in no way rule out there being a market for an MTH/Lionel version (all 3 made the PRR 6-4-4-6, apparently reasonably successfully).

And, just because you have one from 3rd Rail (not my favorite brand) does not mean that I wouldn't buy one from Lionel (MTH? Maybe - but I run TMCC mostly.) So, this automatic "been done" idea is not a reason to not offer something - it may be a good reason, ultimately, but not automatically. I see this sentiment here regularly.

What we need are more warbonnet F-units. Right?

I agree. I would definitely buy one. It's unique. The TE-1 would of course use a 072 minimum curve.

What you think of the N&W TE-1 6-6-6-6 as the next Lionel Vision Line for 2017?

Since Sunset/3rd Rail already produced a model of this, I wouldn't think Lionel would waste their time on something so large, that would have potentially limited sales anyway.

What are you saying that since 3rd rail already made the Big boy, Challenger,N&W Y6B, and the myriad of other locomotives that Lionel would not waste their time. Lionel also produced larger as well as MTH.

Do you think Sunset Models can out source their tooling or did they make their tooling a one off? I'm pretty sure they made some money from the limited amount they made. Their bone yard price is $2400. Lionel would sell thousands. ow many BiG Boy do you think Lionel made? Im sure it was more than 120.

Sorry but, you comparison is NOT comparing apples to apples. ALL of the manufacturers could, and have, sell/sold MANY, MANY, MANY versions of UP 4-8-8-4s, 4-6-6-4s, N&W Y class and C&O H-8 class models. However the N&W TE-1 was/is a one-of-a-kind locomotive, and ONLY those folks with large enough layouts, and like N&W steam power, would be interested (then there are always the few 'shelf queen' collectors that will purchase ANYTHING).

Besides, Sunset/3rd Rail STILL has one in stock, so I suggest you just purchase THAT one.

Sunset/3rd Rail produces all the O-SCALE steam models in hand made brass, i.e. therein no "tooling".

I'm pretty sure they made some money from the limited amount they made.

That is a given, especially since they would NOT have gone into production without sufficient reservations/orders.

You have GOT to be kidding!

Again, UP "Big Boys", NYC Hudsons, and PRR steam locomotives & GG1s, will ALWAYS sell, over, and over, and over again.
