If anyone starts feeling confident about their ability to repair/maintain O gauge locos, try finding a Protosounds MTH cab forward, and change the traction tires on it. It is a humbling experience. Sheesh.

I do all my own work....but I run conventional so all I mess with is DCRU replacement as far as electronics go. Mechanical stuff is pretty easy after building real race, classic and vintage cars for years.
There are probably very few of us that don't have a horror story about a repair or restoration gone bad! Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

True enough Chris. The one thing I do like though about this scale/gauge is that repairs are quite possible so long as one has the right tools and the right amount of patience to use them. This past week and half, I have repaired or fixed various O scale/gauge locomotives for various people. I am always delighted when I can do this as this gives me joy.

I think I'd rather swap the camshaft in my sport truck again than tackle replacing the rear traction tire on my Lionel J1A. Its hanging there waiting for me to muster up the courage.
Traction tires? We don't need no stinking traction tires. I have a Lionel /MPC steamer that I only recently realized was supposed to have a traction tire on one of the drivers. It still pulls quite a few cars with out it! lol
Anybody care to post an opinion about Bullfrog Snot? Because for some reason, after so many years, I began throwing traction tires on various engines too.

works well for traction, although it doesn't hold up for too long on O gauge stuff. probably the weight as compared to HO
IMO, stick with traction tires. I pitched the BF Snot after one test, unimpressive.
