Numbered Turnouts | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Up until now I always used "O" or "O27" track and turnouts, where the radius was the driver.

What does a #11 or #8 turnout mean and how do the numbers relate to radii?

numbered turnouts do not have a curve on the diverging route. they are straight, just like the prototype. the numbers relate to how fast the rails diverge-- eg: a #8 turnout will diverge 1 unit of length for 8 units of length (1 foot for 8 feet along the non diverging route). As a consequence, numbered turnouts are very long--- Hope this helps.

Sometimes prototype switches curve, as needed, on the diverging route. Typically "turnout" is a modeling term.
