Eddie,

I believe that a few of our responders to your question have the AF NYC Dockside set confused with the 0 gauge one. There is no whistle in the L-AF Dockside.

The L-AF dockside runs well and can pull reasonably well for it size and price. Dependability and durability are greatly improved over the Gilbert 21155. The smoke is weak, but if one places a longer train behind it and thereby runs at a higher voltage, smoke production is reasonable. The coupler return springs (one on each end) on the loco are a bit too strong, but less stiff more suitable ones are easily substituted.

The set includes rolling stock decorated for NYC not available separately in the Flyer lineup and this may interest you. I have seen these sets from time to time lately for about $220, which at that price becomes something of a deal because that is effectly about $130 for the rolling stock. The number 6-48069 Dockside engine in the NYC set (6-49618) was not a separate sale item, so it is exclusive to the set, as well.

Hope this helps.

Permit me to clarify.

The 6-48056 was available for extra sale, but the Dockside in the 6-49618 NYC set is the 6-48069 which has the number 21157 on its cab (not New York Central), thus it drops into the numbering slot left open by Gilbert (i.e., 21155, 21156, 21158) for their run of Docksides.

While we are at it, the set also includes the 6-48631 NYC hopper, 6-48371 NYC boxcar, and the 6-48744 NYC caboose. The cars and loco are found only in this set unless someone breaks it up.

Hope this helps.

I have the 6-49618 set (two of them, actually), and it's a nice little set. I have several of the other re-issued/updated Docksiders and they all run as well/better than the originals and exhibit the same "light smoke" issues of the 21155. Actually, I think the smoke is fine, but the choo-choo is barely audible. The set comes with a circle of 54" radius track and a couple sections of regular AF-style straights. With respect to the track, I have some K-Line 54" diameter track that I purchased a few years ago and I think the sections in the set are of better quality. The ends of the K-Line stuff are not trimmed "square", but the Lionel sections seem fine. While the transformer included in the set is small, it does include buttons that will actuate the bell and whistle on other "Flyonel" locomotives so equipped.

Without "advertising", I'd note that there are typically a couple of these sets available on eBay, typically in the $220-$275 range. However, I've noticed for several months that volume sellers still have them at bargain prices. Charles Ro is currently listing the set for $174.95. As Bob Bubeck notes, this is a bargain considering the prices of the individual components. I think that's about what I paid for my sets when there seemed to be a "glut" of them a few years ago.

Good luck if you decide to purchase one of these sets. They can be a fun-to-run complete set that won't break the bank.
