I grew up mere feet from the 4-track main near Batavia NY, but now I cannot remember if any NYC diesels, especially those routinely assigned to the major passenger trains Had silver or dark great trucks, instead of the standard black. Just a nagging detail, for whatever reason, I recall the Empire State Express, when I saw it, had lighter colored trucks occasionally.

I am pretty sure the Central repainted the trucks silver on the E8s. I have pics but can’t post them here. If you google New York Central E8 you will find those pictures. I repainted my K-Line E8s to match the pictures.

I looked at photos of NYC E7 and E8 diesels on Railpictures.net, and found silver trucks from 1953 to 1958, and dark colored trucks from 1960 on.
But that's just a view from a galloping horse.
