Looking at this tree and what it represents brings back fond memories. When our two children were young we would take annual trips into the city by bus from Woodside Queens where my parents lived to Fifth avenue and walk to the tree to see it in all its glory (Rockefeller Center). From there we would stroll down fifth avenue to look at all the decorated store fronts and finally to Macy's for a visit to Santa Claus.

Last Christmas my son (now 42  and now married with a two year old of his own) was home for the holidays and asked to go visit the tree in Rockefeller Center which we did on New Year's day. Like I said, fond memories.

The tradition of the NYC Rockefeller Center Christmas walking tour started by yourself has been an ongoing  tradition for my family as well. The only thing that we hope to avoid is what happened during week two in Dec 2016. The blocks and area around Rockefeller Center was so crowded there must have been a person every 10" of space. One thing that we added was a stop at the Bryant Park open air market on 42nd and 6th (Ave of the Americas). Lots of International Shops of all types there, food vendors, a carousel  and a ice skating arena. Its worth a stop.

I used to work as a store window designer/fabricator in a store window that looked out on the tree. The time the workers are putting into the tree is not just adding lights. They are also adding branches to the tree to make it look perfect. Often there is a metal armature added as well to hold the added weight. There is not just one tree there. There are at least three big ones cut up used as branches to fill it out as well as some smaller entire trees that are added as branches at the bottom.

The first time I saw the tree guys welding on the armature I was sure they were going to burn the whole thing down.

If you are in the area before the lighting I recommend taking a look at all of the work that goes in on prepping it.
