Today Friday 03-17-2023, I visited IRM (Illinois Railway Museum) as part of a tour for the Chicago O-Scale March Meet 2023.

Although I am a member of IRM & visit at least once each year during operating season, today is the first time that I toured the Diesel & Steam Shops which are normally closed to visitors due to their hazardous work.

I took advantage of this opportunity to have my Sunset 3rd Rail E5A Phase II 1/48 scale model meet its prototype, EMD E5A Phase I  1/1scale CB&Q #9911A Silver Pilot.

Today, Silver Pilot was resting with the Nebraska Zephyr consist in one of IRM's barns with their large steam locomotives.

In the future, I plan to add photos of other O-gauge models with their prototype 1/1 scale counterparts.

The photo below is of me standing by the "pilot" of prototype Silver Pilot with my 3rd Rail model resting on the prototype's anticlimber.  A big THANK YOU to OGR Forumite @New Haven Joe  for taking this photo of me with my cell phone !!!

Enjoy !!!

In this view of the prototype Silver Pilot's nose, the 3rd Rail model is still resting on the footboard on the side of the prototype.

The model sure does look 48 times smaller than the prototype in this photo.

The other March Meet folks on the tour were very nice & interested in both IRM's real locomotives & my 3rd Rail model.

Although I informed them that the 3rd Rail model is of a Phase II E5A and that the prototype is a Phase I E5A, none of them cared.  They enthusiastically enjoyed both the prototype & the model !!!  They are all great people !!!

Thank you to Nick Kallus for the tour Of IRM and to IRM for the preservation of Silver Pilot !!!

Thanks to CB&Q and GM-EMD for building Silver Pilot & the other 15 E5 locomotives !!!

Thanks to Sunset 3rd Rail for including Silver Pilot in their Run 2 of their E5 models !!!

Hey Bill,

Nice shots of you and the Sunset 3rd Rail E5. But I want to know, when you left, did you go home with the Sunset version or were you able to tow the GM-EMD 1:1 "model" with your car?

When I lived in Illinois back in the 60's and 70's I too would visit the IRM a couple times a year. Took lots of photos which I still have. Even road inside the NZ.

I'll dig up some of my photos and post them on this tread later today.

@SANTIAGOP23

Thank you for all of your input on 3rd Rail’s E5A & E5B O-Scale model !!!

In my opinion, 3rd Rail’s E5A Phase II Model is at its best as E5A Phase I name Silver Pilot & Number #9911-A !!!

Did you purchase one of the 1958-1968 versions of 3rd Rail’s E5B ?

If yes, please post a photo for us !!!

In Zephyrus we trust !!!
