Sorry, I don't have a GP9 but I do have a very good GP7 Atlas model.  Main visual difference is the Hand rails. Note that the Atlas model had the option to leave the dynamic brake blister off.

Straight hood, no dynamic brake right bottom of picture.

Interesting cooling fan detail

I believe Atlas did do the GP9 also.   Number and size of fans changed over the years, upgrades and changes.

Also note that several of the posted pictures show the steam generator stack on the short hood. Steam generator was used for passenger service coach heating.

I like the NYC version shown.  Original MSRP: $549.99  Announced in 2015 catalog.  Very nice.

I have 2, an Atlas GP9 SAL unit with PS2 guts:

0006

Excellent runner.

And a Lionel GP9, ex-Wabash, repainted to SAL light green.  From this:

DSCF0003

To This:

1912 001

IMO the Atlas/MTH Hybrid is the best slow-speed runner (I think DCS has better slow-speed control than TMCC/CAB-1L, don't necessarily care for the Big Red Knob), but the Lionel unit has the best sound.  Both are equal as far as top speed and they look good together.

Both are cramped for space, I found it necessary to remove all unused wiring in the Atlas unit when I installed PS2, also removed the smoke unit from both.  Converted both to fixed pilots and Kadee couplers.

From what I could find SAL 1912 was the ONLY GP9 painted in this scheme.  I have black and white photos of it in the older dark green and the light green, you can see the difference.  So far no color photo of 1912 has appeared on radar, but I bet there's one out there somewhere.
