As some of you know, I have a compact 3x3 O27 layout, a rounded square if you will, no switches. I have no room for expansion or wider curves (maybe not the most impressive thing, but I can run trains, and that's all that matters! ). The earlier thread about O27 equipment got me thinking about other things I might want to add to my collection, so I was wondering if any of you knew what will take an O27 curve or will not (again, no switches).

I have to say, I never cared much for it at first, but the PRR S2 turbine has really grown on me. I thought I read somewhere there was one (PW) version of it that will not take an O27 curve, is this true and if so, which one?

These two are probably longshots but

I think I read somewhere the N&W J Class from 1957 (?) will not take an O27 curve (I think I read it's one of the few PW Lionel trains that won't) is this true? (again, long shot as that one is usally pretty $$$, but if anyone knows of a repro that is O27, let me know)

Same for the Daylight (any makers, I know MTH made a railking one, will that one take it).

Speaking of MTH, any of the subways? I know the earlier ones are marked that they can, but did this change over the years?

Finally, the GG1s. I know a PW GG1 with intact markings is probably gonna run pretty steep, so what about modern versions (obviously the scale sized ones won't, I know that). I take it Lionel's traditional sized ones will, but how about WBB (seems some of the semi scale ones do, some don't), Kline, RMT, etc.?

Thanks!

I know the postwar turbines will work on o27 curves, as will the MPC era one and the Century Club one. I don't know if they will navigate remote switches with their large covers, but that doesn't sound like an issue for you at the moment.

I do not know about the J or the Daylight. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

I have a modern era GG1 that will navigate o27 curves and even go around the remote switches, though possibly not if it makes an S curve. I assume postwar and MPC versions will work too.

Hope this helps,

This brings up an interesting question, in regard to the S2 turbines.  The 671/681/682 and the 2020 are all sharing the same shells and frames on the post '46 models, and the 2020 is considered 027.  Therefore the other 3 should also work on 027.  The difference on frames was "magna-traction" on the 681/682.  Common knowledge has the 3 digit locos are "O", and the 4 digit are for "027".  The slant motor turbines are the same frame, but machining in later production, added the cutout for magnatraction to be added.

My original loco was a 2020 in 1953, and the layout was all "027" track, with switches (4), and ran without any problems.

Joe,

Have you given any thoughts about the wonderful world of tinplate? It is a 027 proven and affordable part of toy train history. Since you're not running switches your choice of engines is expanded even more.

Another item that might be of interest would be the early K-Line (before Lionel). The early K-Line GG1's were 027 size. K-Line had an entire line of 027 sized rolling stock as well. IMHO K-Line is the best choice for the cost driven, restricted size operators.

Thanks all for the responses, I think the S2 is moving up on my list of PW trains to acquire. Interesting about the Williams J, maybe if I see one for a good price, and thanks for the info on the GG1s.

I am very familiar with KLine, I was introduced to O gauge via an article about the S2 Diesels, I know own 3 as well as two Marx tooled Pacifics and several pieces of rolling stock, including something from the Train 19 line recently acquired with the 3rd S2 at the Springfield show. And yes, I do think Kline was/is great for the O27 operator and I think Walter for continuing the line. I was more seeking advice on particular instances of equipment I'd like to own (S2 turbine, J, Daylight, subways). Funny you should mention tinplate, I do own some Marx tinplate, and you know, I was just thinking recently about the Torpedo, especially given it was Hallmark's ornament this year (btw, why haven't they had the S2 Turbine up?).

Still, anyone have info on the Daylight and Subway sets from Lionel and MTH? I guess I should add the MN/LIRR M7s to that. It seems that the earlier sets (and the Candy Cane one) were rated for O27, but now O36 (not just O31).
