Recently had the opportunity to run 2 Vision Line Big Boys (4012 & 4014) in a TRain consist on the layout and noticed a few things.  Curious if anyone else has noticed this or is my situation unique.

Independently each Big Boy behaves as it should.  Everything works perfectly.

In TRain mode the lead locomotive acts completely normal - all functions work.

The rear locomotive does not have whistle smoke or blowdown effects when part of a TRain but the lead locomotive does.  All switches are in the on position for those effects on both locomotives.

Also it seems that the rear locomotive has a slightly deminished smoke output when in TRain mode.

Currently I have the TRain programmed with the 4012 as the lead and the 4014 as the rear.  Also I have programmed the TRain so both engines blow their whistles.

Feel free to share your thoughts / experiences.

Thanks!

That's how all TMCC/Legacy locomotives will function in TR mode.  The lead locomotive has all the bell and whistles as it were, and the other locomotives pretty much only provide muscle.  Remember, you can still address the locomotive using ENG and get smoke adjustment and blow down while it is running in a TR.

As for programming for both to whistle, how'd you do that?

I suspect the blow down issue is normal as it is unrelated to the signaling sounds that you can assign.  Why the whistle steam doesn't activate with whistle sounds seems a little odd.

Yep correct on the 2nd Big Boy I have whistle sound, but no whistle smoke.

Could very well be John, had not thought of that.  Perhaps one of the Lionel guys will chime in and shed some light too.

When I designed the Whistle/Blow-down smoke controller for the VBB, I decided to allow the whistle to sound on the non-head unit following the"Sound Masking", but not trigger smoke (or blowdown) to conserve power.  While I could have let the whistle smoke switch control the effect, I decided the best all around solution was to simply turn off the smoke system for the whistle and blow-down when not the head unit.

Personally, I'd like to be able to do a blowdown on non head units. it would look great.

Is it possible for future Legacy products to allow the smoke features, depleting coal feature...etc, to be individually turned off/on by the Legacy remote? (I know the smoke volume can be done by the remote).  Leave the switches in the loco for the conventional guys...This is something that MTH does in their DCS and I was wondering if the same can be done in Legacy, not knowing the limits of the system design...

Thx for your answers on this forum.

Anything is possible!  When we look at the delivery of the functionality, we have to take into consideration the complexity of use from a remote perspective.  We try and balance features and complexity; along with consistent behavior over all of the product lines.

I believe if you double head the VBB locos in a TRain, and want blowdown or Whistle smoke on the 2nd loco, should be as simple as selecting the loco ID (ENGine ID) directly and activating the feature.  This is consistent with every command loco Lionel has ever produced.  Individual control is always possible, and TR mode functionality tries to give you the best all around experience with the TR operation.
