How do I remove the covers on the outside that expose the gears? Do I need to remove the body plastic first?

Lionel has several different styles of power truck. A picture of the bottom of the truck would help
To access the internal gear and worm you'll have to remove the shell and remove the can motor from the truck.
too much hassle...thanks
On some of the newer Lionel diesels, you turn the truck 1/4 turn counter clockwise and the truck comes off, leaving the motor intact in the frame.
Not sure what years Lionel used that design, but you might try it to see if it works.

SO, I looked at the bottom to remove the 6 (I think) screws, once that is done how do I remove the can motor from the truck? Anyone have a video? Im scared Im going to screw something up!
You must remove the shell and then remove the motormount from the chassis and the power truck. This "usually" involves removing 4 screws.
I normally try to raise the motor out of the gearbox just enough to shoot some grease in there with a syringe. The motor need not come completely out of the loco.
It's tedious, but not impossible with some patience. Pay close attention to how things go together as you disassemble.
We don’t call them puzzle trucks for no reason at all,……😉
