I know this topic comes up all lot and I have tried a search, but cannot get an answer to my problem.  I am new to DPS and trying to get the handheld to run a conventional engine on my layout.   Tiu is powered with a z1000 brick only through fixed 1 and I  can run Proto 2 engines on test track on fixed 1.  Have a separate 1000 brick with controller into var 1 and output on var 1 out.  Have selected track and assigned to tiu 1 and clicked s1 for all and highlighted var 1 choice, but as soon as I put power to track, engine has power.  Handheld reads 18 which is what the book says it should do, but I have no control from handheld.

I know that I need to get Barrys book but have not  yet.  I don't have to enter a name for that conv engine in do I because I have no idea how I would enter a non-MTH engine.   How about some advice or simply words of encouragement for an old dog trying to learn new tricks.   Thank you any and all.     TIU  is ver L, if that makes a difference.

Try this one.... Menu/System/DCS set up/ Select var 1 and hit FXD, The FXD key  is like a toggle that changes the channel from fixed to var mode with each press... The remote will tell you what mode you've selected.. In this case we went var mode.

Now go to the TR on the dcs remote. select the var channel and scroll up the voltage...

PS if you're trying to run a proto-2 in conventional you'll also have to turn off the dcs signal.

Same command.... Menu/System/ Dcs set up//// Lots of options for turning the dcs signal on or off /

I know that I need to get Barrys book but have not  yet

That would, indeed, answer all of your questions.

There's an entire section devoted to conventional operation under DCS, along with just about every other DCS topic.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store!

Kountry Mailman,

The cool thing about the DCS is that you can run both Conventional and P2/P3 engines both at the same time, from the DCS hand held remote control, doing this with my Father's original Tin Plate 263E Work Train is way cool, having my Repro MTH 263E P2 Work Train, to run right along side it at the same time, is just fantastic!  As a kid in the late 40's, I only dreamed about this kind of remote control, now it actually exists.

Yep nothing beats Tin Plate Remote Control Trains - Especially at Christmas Time!

Wish Lionel would make a Legacy 263E, Work Train, I would have that one also!
