First off, I am new to the forum, Thanks for allowing me on.

I read all I could find on old MTH.  I have two that have no batteries, just a whistle/horn and the smoke on the steam is similar to the American Fler type (Piston in tube).  My question is about the whistle on the steam engine. (MTH # 30-1104 Hudson 4-6-4) If I press the whistle button, it sounds but then will not stop until I shut it down.  Is there a fix/ repair that anyone has come across?  The  F3 diesel horn is ok acts as expected.

My power supply is a Z1000 brick and the MTH  Bell/Horn/Direction unit with a rotary speed control.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

That product number (30-1104) comes up empty at the MTH website, but if you just type in 1104, one of the results is 30-Set-18 (spring 1996 catalog) with "1104 U.P. Hudson Engine" and an assortment of UP cars.  The support tab for this has nothing to offer (all selections greyed out). The MTH history book on page 208 has 30-1104-0, a UP Hudson with cab number 3225 (spring 1996 catalog).  The problem sounds like a sticking relay, but the history book says it has an electronic whistle.

That's the one I have  Cab #3225. I should have mentioned I did a search at MTH and came up with much of what you reported.  Inside the tender there is a two tier electronics board, The bottom one has to be the reverse unit the top one the whistle as it has wires to the speaker. There is a date on it 1995-06-02 . I have a couple of pix attached.  One other question, do you suppose it is upgradable to PS2 or 3?  Otherwise I would just love to have the whistle stop when the button is released. INsidesWhistleBd

I can’t help with fixing the whistle, but I’m sure there are others here that can either tell you how to fix it or tell you it can’t be fixed.

I don’t think PS2 conversion kits are still available.  PS3 conversion kits should be available, but would cost you over $300 including labor.  If you just want a bell and whistle, there are other boards out there that will do that for a lot less than a PS3 conversion.

Thank you, for your quick reply,  Other boards?  Now that sounds interesting.  I had an estimate of around $300 to upgrade (when they became available).  I'd love to do it but that would make this engine cost more than buying a brand new one.  At 76, I am loathe to spend that much just for "sounds".  I really have to more savvy on this "new to me" O ga. stuff.  As you may have guessed, electronics is not my strong point.
