I have a MTH Premier Rio Grande F3 ABA unit from 2002 that has PS2 and has been in storage for about 9 years and had a nice life with good run time about 82 hours on the Chrono. The sounds are incredibly low, muffled, distorted, just sound painful to listen to. I honestly know nothing about speakers but I have attached some photos of the speaker and was wondering if someone more informed could tell me if it looks like its dead.  The angles are not great but its hard to hold as it is sucked up to the frame of the engine.

yes you definitely need a new speaker. what is your engine mth item number I susect it is a ps2 5 volt board, if so you need a new 16 ohm 5 watt speaker, Don't keep using your engine as magnet is failing and if the magnet metal pieces  that are coming  loose get inside the voice coil and short it to ground you will burn out the audio amp inside the electronic. that is a normal issue you sometimes get when the engines get older, just replace the speaker and ill bet your sound will return and work normal again!

If you have another 16 ohm 50mm speaker you can use it. Put an ohm meter across the terminals of the replacement speaker and make sure it reads 16 ohms. If its another Star Speaker I would recommend just replacing it. No sense in putting in another speaker that can develop the same problem. If you order a new one order BF-0000033.

Actually, the Star speakers have been used by MTH for years, it was only a specific batch that was affected by the plating issue you see here.

FYI, the BF-0000033 is a Star NR-05009-01, so you're telling him to order the speaker you just told him not to use!

Wait is BF-0000033 a bad speaker that I should not order, or is that the a good replacement speaker

I seem to dis-agree. I did research this before posting. That being said I haven't ordered either of these speakers in some time.

Go to https://www.mthtrains.com/parts and do a search on BF-0000033 and you get this . Enter BF-0000022 and you get this . It is listed as (STAR) (FR-050-A1421) (16 ohms) (5 watt) (has a red dot on top of speaker) (50.0mm).

Both 16 ohm 5 watt 50mm speakers. Neither is listed as Star NR-05009-01. BF-0000033 replaces it. At least that is how I interpreted it.

yes it might be possible especially if you unsolder the leads and leave them loose if a speaker wire touches ground or chassis of the engine you just blew the amp and possible all the electronics and the ps 2 3 volt n 5 volt boards are not cheap, you'd be better to just order the speaker and install it when you get it!  depends would you rather spend $15.00 to $20.00 or have  to replace a $ 200.00 board the choice is yours !

Yes, Leaving the leads exposed can and will lead to bad things. I am not to sure dis-connecting the speaker and taping off the leads will. I just called MTH tech. Don suggested turning the volume down just to be save. He agrees and does not think it is a problem. But if you want to be save park it till the speaker comes.

ASC Tech for too long to Remember . Forest.

Of course he needs a 16 ohm speaker!  Look at the picture!

I’m in the same boat. Same speaker but bottom line is 102 E. <—(What’s this ?)

Mine is for 2001 SP GS2. Never run before.  Replaced battery with orange BCR. Ran one loop but gave up because of wretched sound. Checked speaker and spotted some flaking. MTH web page looks like a strike out. Last one matches but says obsolete and out of stock (and that bottom line is different).
