Another approach to using separate leds would be using fiber optics with the end of each fiber optic strand being a point of light (rather than an individual led) and the ends of those fiber optic strands could be bundled together and lit by just one led. IMO, this would be much simpler and economical alternative to using an multiple leds.

I saw  the short article......each light is not a LED but rather just a drilled hole!  You edge light the plexy with any light source and cover the plexy in foil to trap the light and then each drilled hole becomes a 'blub'. I've done the fiber optic route.....I think this may be easier and a LOT thinner......
