have a car that doesn't really belong anywhere in your collection but for some reason has a certain connection which keeps it on the shelf?  here are two of mine...

NONPAREIL LIMITED coach...  i must admit i can run this as a single coach train behind a Flyer clockwork locomotive and it looks ok, but i have very little information on what NonPareil made and rarely see any for sale.  it has NJ heritage and i did grow up there...

the roof is quite unusual...

although this may also have something to do with it... my dad's favorite candy was chocolate nonpareils...

GATX 910 - Gilbert Chemicals

ok, it's plastic tinplate, but i hardly have anything plastic and practically nothing S gauge.  what can i say... i am a fan of Erector Sets, i had a Gilbert Chemical Set and it's Gilbert Chemicals!... maybe some day i'll get the rest of an S gauge semi-tinplate train.

anyone else?
cheers...gary

by the way... thanks John for this link (in another string).  i see NonPareil cars there listed as "floor toys" and while it is very close to O gauge, i do notice that mine is a bit under-gauge and on rough track can easily bounce off the rails.  but hey, that's tinplate at it's finest as far as i'm concerned.

Not sure those wheels are original to that car, as they have flanges.  I have seen Nonpareil cars over the years and do not recall the specifics on the wheels, but generally floor toys do not have flanged wheels because they were not made for track.

I have a few and the cars all came with flanged wheels. Wheel colors vary.

Mine are 8 wheel cars. Getting them to sit on O track would not be difficult, but the fixed trucks would be problematic.

i must admit that while i have seen floor toys with wheels that look like this...

i wonder if floor toy trains were actually meant to run on track, ... track that was on the floor.  while conventional motorized train layouts are often elevated to operator height, as kids many of my toys stayed near ground level.  ...and wouldn't it make sense to run a train on a track?  maybe calling it a floor train was just a general way of saying... "track not included".

of course a change of wheels can not be ruled out in this case as i have no idea about the history of this car.

Have seen 1253 coaches and 168917 boxcars with floor wheels but not sure if they were swapped out or not.

Most of the Non Pareil and Mohawk cars have semi-flanged wheels but I am not sure if this means they intended for them to be used as floor and track trains or not.
