The problem with trades is you really don't know what you are getting

I don't see where making a trade is any different than purchasing a used item from a private party.  If you are comfortable purchasing used trains, then making a trade should be OK.  All the cautions that apply to purchasing used trains applies to a trade too.

Most folks measure whether a trade is a good idea by comparing the retail values of the items being exchanged. Ideally they should be close. There is nothing wrong with doing this, but there can be other considerations.
If the item you are receiving is difficult to find, then you may be willing to give up some higher value stuff to get it.
Also, you may want to consider what you could really get for your stuff if you went to sell it. If its a mail order deal, there is shipping, and if you use a commercial site to sell, there are commissions. And don't forget those PayPal commissions. And unless the item you are selling is difficult to find, a quick sale means you probably will need to set an attractive price

I never did that much trading with anybody other than my brother.

My most memorable trade was with a fellow from the other side of the country. We both had scarce items that the other wanted. I thought his item had more cash value than mine. But he didn't care. It took a very look time to finalize the deal, but we ended up trading even.
