Opinions and advice for pit weathering.

Started weathering my new Ross turntable. How do most of you do this? I used chalks. The wall of the pit still needs work but you can see where I'm going.

As for the pit floor. Are there other colors I should be including? I'm guessing most pits are basically full of soot and ash?
