Sound can be very subjective.

Loud may be a desired quality for a public show but much softer sounds scaled not just to distance but as a desire to let a train "disappear" into the background while another train's presence occupies the closer audible focal point.

Loud sounds of one or more locomotives running around a layout of any size seems IMO to make it smaller.  As a 2 rail modeler I prefer sound to be scaled.  tt

I am with Tom on this one....I have turned down the sound on my steamers especially.  For a locomotive that is supposed to be a scale distance away, they should not be over powering sound-wise.  Just as Tom said above, it makes the layout seem smaller if the sound is loud since the locomotive never "goes away"....

Clem,

Don't know of a good way to do that here, maybe some of the more advanced users will have some tips. I see a lot of posts referring to other threads, but I don't know how they readily find those? The forum search function is all I can think of here, but I'm not real good with searches and usually have only limited success.

I made a small database in Filemaker and try to enter just enough info so I can easily look up topics later. For the OGR threads, I cut & paste the title and url link to the thread so I can call it up later on. Bookmarks in your browser might be another idea, but I haven't had much success with that either.

I also made another Filemaker Database for my train stuff after not finding anything ready made that fit my needs. I know just enough in Filemaker to cobble a few things together here & there, nothing very advanced.

Don't want to get us off topic here, but I think this would be a good topic to start some time in a separate thread. Keeping track of your train info or something like that?
