I thought I'd share the early stages of my new overhead (shelf) layout. With a cathedral ceiling I decided not to hang the roadbed from the ceiling, but to use a shelf for the roadbed. The total dimensions are 15'x12.5'. So far I have installed the roadbed, usung 1" poplar boards with corners cut from 3/4" birch plywood. I didn't like the look of large triangular corners, so I cut 4" curved sections from the plywood triangles and hung them with L brackets at each of the 4 corners. Each corner will get a curved bridge from Bridgeboss (3 girders and 1 truss) laid on top of the plywood. Even without ceiling hangers, the corners seem to be rigid enough, The bridges will be purely for visual effect, rather than for strength. overhead 1

The track will be single-track Tinman O gauge with 072 curves at the corners. The shelves are 6" wide, except for one side that will be 8" wide. I'll be running an SP Daylight 9-car passenger consist pulled by a  MTH PRR Railking Imperial Diesel (until I can afford a Daylight steam engine). I've decided to paint the roadbed a dark green and the walls a lighter shade of the same paint. That should be pretty dramatic, rather than painting the roadbed white, like the trim in the room. The brackets will be painted to blend in with the walls or roadbed, respectively. Since I don't have room for scenery (and it wouldn't show on the shelves anyway), I'm hanging model hot air balloons and aircraft from the ceiling for visual interest. At some future date I might install an extension on one shelf to accommodate a siding. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. I'll post additional photos if there is interest. I'll also post photos as I make more progress.

GJP,

Here is a long shot of my overhead layout.   1 X 10's with 1 X 16's at the ends.  I hung them similar to yours.  Doweled the ends into each other.   Used Midwest roadbed, double tracked, with Gargraves.  Small yard at one end, one long spur line.  Runs four DCS engines on the two tracks.

Here is a pic of one of the two 7 1/2 inch high, 35 foot long, backdrops that Dave from Backdrop Junction customized for it.  They hide all the brackets and add depth to the layout.  You may wish to consider this type of addition.

Here is one of two bridges from Bridgeboss that I modified for the table layout overhead addition.  I really like the bridges Jim made for you, but with my double-track, there was no way I could include them in my overhead layout.

Finally, here is a pic of the rope LED lights I use to light the overhead, plus the addition of Miller signs over the bar.  The rope lights can't be seen, of course, and add a unique striated effect to the two city scenes on the backdrops.  The striations make it look like the buildings are lighting those scenes, which are not shown in this old pic.

You've made a cool layout.  Hope this gives you some more ideas.  Layouts are never finished.....

An airborne layout makes sense when regular floor space is unavailable. In a trade off with my wife in 1992 I evacuated her Den carpet in exchange for rights in her 14x32 kitchen-breakfast room with a 22' high ceiling . I built a twin shelf 5 track operation, one @ 7'-6 high[above cabinets] and one above it @ 9'-0 high. I enjoyed running for 16 years. I can no longer post photos but they were shown on the Forum many, many time back in the past. I dismantled it in 2008 due to health issues that required a relocation from our Western N.C. mountain home to our Greensboro Condo and access to better med facilities.

For the first 8 years I usually powered 7 trains on the 5 tracks with 3 pw ZWs before changing to TMCC powered by 5 180 PowerHouses, some linked to TPC 400s for conventional operation [when needed] from the handheld remote.  All Gargraves Flextrack and turnouts[only 4].
