I thought I'd share the early stages of my new overhead (shelf) layout. With a cathedral ceiling I decided not to hang the roadbed from the ceiling, but to use a shelf for the roadbed. The total dimensions are 15'x12.5'. So far I have installed the roadbed, usung 1" poplar boards with corners cut from 3/4" birch plywood. I didn't like the look of large triangular corners, so I cut 4" curved sections from the plywood triangles and hung them with L brackets at each of the 4 corners. Each corner will get a curved bridge from Bridgeboss (3 girders and 1 truss) laid on top of the plywood. Even without ceiling hangers, the corners seem to be rigid enough, The bridges will be purely for visual effect, rather than for strength.
The track will be single-track Tinman O gauge with 072 curves at the corners. The shelves are 6" wide, except for one side that will be 8" wide. I'll be running an SP Daylight 9-car passenger consist pulled by a MTH PRR Railking Imperial Diesel (until I can afford a Daylight steam engine). I've decided to paint the roadbed a dark green and the walls a lighter shade of the same paint. That should be pretty dramatic, rather than painting the roadbed white, like the trim in the room. The brackets will be painted to blend in with the walls or roadbed, respectively. Since I don't have room for scenery (and it wouldn't show on the shelves anyway), I'm hanging model hot air balloons and aircraft from the ceiling for visual interest. At some future date I might install an extension on one shelf to accommodate a siding. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. I'll post additional photos if there is interest. I'll also post photos as I make more progress.
