Just wondering out loud if anything ever came of OGR maybe making a building in honor of him. Has any one heard anything on this building or is it not going to happen because of "lack of interest". I would like one and would be one of the first in line.

Please let me know if you have heard any info on this.

This is just an FYI for you all from MTH....I got the following in an e-mail:

Hi Roger,

We certainly understand the desire by yourself and others to honor Owen's memory. By all accounts, he was a wonderful person who did a lot for our hobby.

However, the Blue Comet Award is intended to honor current efforts to promote O gauge railroading to the general public and, as such, the 2013 award only applies to efforts undertaken between March 2012 and January 2013. For that reason, it would not be an appropriate way to honor Owen's memory.

Thank you for your understanding, and we certainly do applaud your efforts to help fellow hobbyists remember your friend's good works.

Why does this idea of a lifetime achievment award have to be done by a manufacturer? There are several Model Railroad Clubs with significant reputations that could take this on. Such clubs exist in New Jersey and Long Island just to name a couple. How about a well respected O Gauge publication? Say a large plaque in thier main office reception area with a new name tag added each year and a plaque or something for the family or to be a permanant fixture on the members club if so desired.

Just think...The "OGR Lifetime Achievment Award" or the "New Jersey High Railers Lifetime Achievment Award" or better yet name the achievment award after Paul or mayby Tom Snyder (with families permision of course). Base it on voting poll or essay or whatever. Tons of ways that some of the larger groups out there could make this happen. Just get your Board of Directors working on it and get it done before folks loose sight of potential candidates!

It doesn't have to be done by a manufacturer, and some might even argue that it shouldn't be.  If anything, such a lasting tribute should probably be in the purview of the TCA--the largest and most diverse of the toy train organizations.  A nicely done wall plaque displayed in the Toy Train Museum would certainly be very appropriate.

The real challenge would be in defining qualifying criteria for the award and those to be nominated, and in determining just who would make the final selection in each instance.  We all have "favorites"--living and dead--but the process for nomination and selection would have to be very specific and well detailed.

If you look at the picture I posted above its a toast to Owen.  We had his whole family here that day.  We dedicated a viaduct on the layout to his achievements abd memory.  Since his handle was Paulinskill we thought the viaduct would be appropriate. There is a plaque commemorating Owen on the viaduct.  I f you go on camera 7 of our webcams you will see Owens memorial poster on our front door.  Isn't that a lifetime achievement award.  I don't understand what more we could do.

I was in no way implying that your club has not done enough to honor Owen. You have done a great job in making sure that Owen's contributions to this hobby are never forgotten as well as preserving the memory of Tom Snyder.

I was only suggesting that a larger club or group would have the reputation and membership to make such an award have some true meaning behind it as well as have a board of directors or administrative group that could put the details, as discussed by Alan above, to agin administer the program. I apologize to the New Jersey High Railers if I can across as not having done enough to honor Owen.
