Parts help, and any ideas welcome

There was an article in the September 2012 issue of Classic Toy Trains about adding a servo motor to animate a water tower, and I think the same can be done for the accessory. You might also be able to repurpose a Tortiose switch machine to animate the swing back and forth.

For the smoke unit, I believe you can subtitute a Seuthe-branded unit or use a fan-driven unit found on most K-Line or Lionel diesels.

You might want to contact Brasseur Electric Trains. They ended up with most all of the K-Line parts and have been helpful in finding odd pieces for me in the past.

I know Micro-Mark sells a number of different small motors in different sizes with various shaft RPM.  You might be able to make one of them work.  Also, your mention of the race car made me think of my Gilbert (american flyer) Auto-Rama slot cars, they have a little AC motor with a worm gear on the shaft to direct-drive the wheels.  Search Auto-Rama on eBay and you can often find single cars in various states of disrepair.

I think I did try Brasseurs, but I do not remember the answer. I'll have to check again.
