A friend just stated there is a passenger train to and from York to Philadelphia?? I never heard of this ..true? I once flew into Philly and rented a car to York, before airlines went nuts and you could fly. No AMTRAK to York?

You could take Amtrak to Lancaster or Harrisburg. Then you would still have to get to York.
As far as I know, there isn't a train from Philadelphia to York. But for the weekend of the York meet, there should be!!
Philly to New York, NY perhaps but not York PA.
Your only option might be a Greyhound bus. There are a lot of Pennsylvania cities without train service. My area lost train service in summer 1981, the Bethlehem to Philly commuter train.
The AMTRAK Pennsylvanian from Phila and NYC stops in Lancaster at 1:52 pm. You still need Uber or a rental to get to York.

I didn't even know you could get to Lancaster ...l shall inform my friend, "you can't get there from here".
Lancaster station area map
And some shopping recommendations
>>I didn't even know you could get to Lancaster...
Lancaster is on Amtrak's "Keystone Service" corridor between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. There are at least 12 trips each way on weekdays., plus the Pennsylvanian to/from Pittsburgh. In addition, Rabbittransit operates weekday bus service between Harrisburg Amtrak station and York.
Distance-wise and driving time-wise, about the same: Harrisburg 24 miles 34 minutes, Lancaster 26 miles 41 minutes. I'd opt for Lancaster if you were renting a car because Strasburg is only about 15 minutes from there. On top of that, you save 38 minutes getting off of Amtrak in Lancaster rather than going on to Harrisburg.

A little dinking around reveals Rabbit Transit's RabbitEXPRESS route 83N travels from Harrisburg to downtown York, after which local route 1W runs from there and stops near the "York Expo Center" (i.e. Orange Hall).
There is also a RabbitEXPRESS route 83S running from downtown York to points served by Baltimore's light rail (Timonium and Hunt Valley)
Routes 83N and 83S are commuter services, with only four (83N) and three (83S) out-and-back trips in the AM and PM. Trying to use them could be tricky without careful planning.

If you are going to fly into an airport and rent a car to drive to York, I'd strongly recommend Baltimore Washington International (BWI) rather than Philadelphia. Substantially shorter drive in time and miles, Easier airport to navigate. Southwest also serves BWI, which keeps cost and delays to a minimum.

BWI is really the choice for flying to York. Nothing else is as close that's reasonable.
How could you not know there's trains to Lancaster, PA?!

This is my train to York, less than two hours door to door.

I also use my car, but once the State Police thought I was driving my "train" too fast to the tune of $85.
Always a rick if your PTC isn't working properly.
