I debating between this set and the Lionel Legacy F7 AA set. Haven't been able to find pics of the MTH units...just a catalog shot.
Thanks in advance.

Ask, and you shall receive!
The MTH catalog photo shows this set with freight pilots. As you can see, it was delivered with passenger pilots. I'd have preferred the other, but no big deal.
I reviewed this set when I got it a few months ago. Here's a link: MTH F7 Review. I had a couple of minor issues with it, which are described in the review (along with the fixes). I don't know that the wiring fix on the tether sockets was really necessary, but since I had it on the bench anyway I went ahead and did it.
I like the set, and I think it represents better value for money compared to the Lionel.

Wow, those are cool! Are these predominately freight or passenger locomotives for Milwaukee?
I have this set, and it is a very nice set.
It has much improved PS3 sounds.
Go for it!

The Milwaukee had both. The passenger A units were actually FP-7's but the visual difference is minimal. The FP-7 was very slightly longer. For the rivet counter, 3rd Rail offers a real FP-7, at a 3rd Rail price. Not sure if it's available in Milwaukee Road.
I have had my set for a while and just got to taking it out of the box yesterday. It is on the display wall until I have time to run it. A very beautiful set.
Even though the MTH units are very nice I believe the Lionel will look just as good and sound even better. Yes a little more expensive but once you run a legacy set of F units that is all you will run. The sound is awesome.
freight, FP7's where passanger

I'll second that. I love my Legacy F units. They look great, run beautifully and the sound is amazing.
I just put my Jersey Central Legacy engines in service this week. I had to cut the tires off and replace them so the wheels would turn. After doing that, they run excellent.
Depends on your definition of "a little more expensive" and your priorities. Lionel's sound is superior, but the PS/3 sound in the MTH F units is quite good. For me personally, sound is nowhere as big a deal on a diesel as it is on a steam locomotive. I have two Legacy steamers and the sound is superlative, but diesel sounds just aren't so exciting that I want to pay big bucks for better sound.
Looking at value, each basic set lists for $729.95 MSRP, but for that price MTH gives you an ABA set with both A units powered and Lionel gives you an AA set with one powered unit. I added a second dummy B unit to my MTH set to make and ABBA. To duplicate this setup in Lionel, with one powered and one dummy B unit, would have cost over $200 more than what I paid at Justrains for the MTH (actual street price, not MSRP). Also, I prefer DCS over Legacy, for the superior ergonomics of the remote and the direct readout in scale MPH. For me the improvement in sound in no way would have been worth the $200 difference.
Each set is excellent; which is better for a particular buyer depends on the buyer's priorities. If you bleed orange and blue, the Lionel is the only choice. Otherwise, there are plenty of things to consider.

Yes you are right the Lionel units are a little more expensive but for the better sound and no tether makes it all worthwhile IMO.

David and Nicole,
You may be right. I do tend to run my Legacy equipment more than my PS2/3 equipped locos. We'll see what I find in this hunt.
WELL CAN'T GET IT TO WORK is not mine but here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_SZ-SUefCg
