He all, this post is a result of another post I made looking for opinions on a new steam engine with the whistle steam effect. I've seen a few videos of the PE with whistle steam and it got me thinking that I'd like one or another similiar engine. Someone mentioned the Lionel Great Northern freight set which comes with a Berkshire and features the whistle steam effect. I've only seen one video online that wasn't really very good..and even Lionel doesn't feature a decent picture of this engine. I'm leaning toward ordering one, but would really like to see some photos and hopefully video before I buy one. Does anyone have this engine and do you have a source of picts and videos of it?

Well after a LOT of searching I managed to find some pictures a seller posted on EBay. I missed the sale but it's nice to see the photos. The Great Northern is a sharp looking engine. I'm hoping somebody can point me to a video that shows the whistle steam effect and tender sounds. For those experienced...do you think the whistle steam is the same as the Polar Express with whistle steam? If I can count on that I'll order it today from Pats.
I have the GN with whistle steam. I believe that it is based on the same berkshire as the polar, so they should have the same steam/smoke.
I looked on you-tube and found a video of the polar with whistle-steam. Looks like the GN and smokes about the same as mine. I get lots more smoke from the stack and a bit less from the whistle than the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6X_bCFi9tk
i watched the video, neat locomotive, loved the effects, but wow talk about traction issues!
Neither my Polar (without whistle-steam) or my GN (with whistle-steam) behave like that. I think that the engineer had the throttle on full while in neutral in order to produce the strong steam. Then cycled to forward at full-throttle, then scaled-down. Neither of my locos spin their drivers, they have traction tires and are strong pullers.
Hello I am the owner of that video and the locomotive did have traction tire issues. I replaced both of the tires and it fixed the problems. As seen in my other videos of it the locomotive does not behave like that. Here's a more updated video I took around Christmas time. Its a good engine other than the tire issues at first its great.
Hi Ken,
Can you tell me about the color of the Great Northern with whistle steam? It almost looks green in the very few photos I can scrounge up, but one makes it look black in color. What color can I expect it to be? Is the detail pretty nice on yours? Thanks for your help!
Mike
