Someone brought me an old MTH PS1 Bantam S2 steam turbine engine and wanted to add some lighting effects, one of which was a Rule 17 Headlight.
The headlight project was pretty simple. I wired a Warm white LED from the motor with an appropriate (680 ohm if memory serves me correctly) sized resistor. The 2mm LED fit perfectly into the headlight lens of the shell. I left the original incandescent bulb in place that is powered from the track. The LED only turns on when the engine moves forward and is considerably brighter than the incandescent that shines through the led when the engine is stopped or in reverse.
Other things added were a backup light (in reverse only) & marker lamps in the tender. Thanks to some old forum posts on PS1 board pin-outs, those were another easy add!
