Have any of you repainted an engine?  I know some are down on repainting but some trains are just not that valuable or collectable.  I have a few Marx 1095 Santa Fe F3 diesels and most were not very pretty with the silver being unpainted plastic and the red being poorly masked sprayed a dull red.  So I got out the spray paint and did a ABA set.  I should have used a dull Testors silver.  I never could afford the Lionel F3 ABA and it is kind of big for my 027 tracks and Marx switches I keep telling myself.

Picking up the Santa Fe decals made the job easier.

thanks Charlie. if viewed in person you can tell the diesels were made from combining badly damaged shells. i have units to do a Canadian Pacific ABA someday. the FW&WR was done with a nice piece to start with. looking for another engine & tender to letter for Virginia Truckee.

I had a 1688E I was planning on doing that exact same thing with Steve. Never got around to it though, the shell is still sitting in my closet. Nice to get a good look at what it could look like though!

 

So far I only have 1 tinplate locomotive (out of 2 working ones that I own) that I've repainted, as seen on an earlier thread.

This was a junker 1688 shell. It has been repainted along with a spare tender. It is also re motored with a Marx 333 smoking motor. I still need to order new nameplates for the sides.

As a 3/16ths O lovin' guy, I have to say that's one well done bash!  The Marx mechanism looks like it was designed to go under that shell - did you have to do much work to fit them together?

I enjoy looking at the repaints. I've been searching for a few Std Gauge as well as O-Gauge power units to redo. I own many original Std & O-Gauge that I inherited from my grandpa. Most of these still have their original boxes.

I've bought a few pieces from others that have been redone. I run these more and more. My favorite Std Gauge passenger cars are the very early 32, 35 & 36. The #'s 33, 38, 50, 8, 10 & 318 are my favorite Std Gauge Electric units.

Please keep the photos coming. I need ideas of where to go & what to do.

It wasn't too hard once I quit procrastinating. I used heavy sheet brass to make a rear motor mount that is screwed to the cab floor. You can see the holes, but the screws for the front mount were not in it when I took the photo being as I'm not done. If you will notice the tear drop shaped smoke stack opening. I cut it out because the smoke unit opening on the Marx motor was a little bit further back, but if I moved the assembly any more forward, the pilot trucks would bind with the shells pilot. I started this project to give my set of streamlined U&R Mfg PRR coaches some motive power.

bought a postwar Lionel 2018 at a train meet for $18.

No tender. looked like somebody had tried to paint it with

a paint brush. It was a hack job. Strip the old paint and repaint

with "Ballet Slipper" pink. right outta the spray can.

Had many at shows ask me if it was a real girls train, even had

someone make me an offer on it. NOT FOR SALE!!

Charlie, Floquil makes a color called "Old Silver", which you can mix with either flat or gloss coat, or 50/50 for semi gloss. I had a friend use it on a Burlington 44 tonner, and it came out really well. 

 

Steve, is that a William Crooks repainted? I have a customer that has one with a broken roof support, it is a wind up and is OK otherwise. It has the tin tender in good shape, but your repaint makes me brave enough to tackle it.

Yes it is a Marx Wm Crooks.I changed the smoke stack to a straight one and the tender now carries coal instead of wood. Just wanted it to be a little different.

Here's my repainted Marx 999. Not just a repaint, but also a reworked pilot to liven the front up a bit, not to trick people into thinking it's a rare closed spoke engine. Also added sand pipes, just because I could. The tender is a former 4 wheel 7" item. Looks good on the point of a Marx 3/16" scale tin train.
