When I was 10 or 12 family friends were moving from New York to California.  I believe they were older than my parents as their son was older than my two older brothers and staying in NY.  Not wanting to haul trains across country they gave the trains to us.  The set, if that is what it was, had Super O track,  was led by the PRR EP5 No. 2352.  It had a log dump car, a barrel unloading car, A brakeman car, a DL&W work caboose.  Lots of operating cars but without an operating track  I don't know if they ever worked.  The EP5 ran on the Super O but wouldn't run on our 027 track so by default running trains was on the Super O.  Fast forward to a college graduate.  Trains had been in a box for quite a long time but I wanted to have trains around the Christmas Tree. Not having enough 027 track and missing most of the center rail clips for the Super O A Lionel Iron Horse Freight set was purchased from TrainLand so that I could see what still worked.  Our old 2-4-2 worked but was kinda week and the EP5 was DOA.  The 4-4-2 from the new set would suffice and the set cars were augmented with some of our old rolling stock.  Hit FF again to an adult deciding to get into this hobby and build his first permanent layout.  I repaired or replaced some of our old rolling stock, the barrel car and theEP5 were disassembled to see if there was an obvious reason neither worked.  25 years later they're still in pieces and it's time to see if they can be resurrected.

The EP5 has suffered the usual battery damage, the frame, horn and solenoid for the horn have all suffered corrosion.  The horn never worked so this damage pre-dates my ownership.  A wire from the horn to the solenoid is disconnected but all other wires are intact.  The pick up roller springs still have some life which surprised me.  I would like to see if the motor works before I worry about trying to get this running.  3 wires come from a harness that connects the E-unit to the motor.  A blue and a yellow each go to one of the motor brushes and a green wire goes to the tab in between.  If I run one wire from a transformer to the blue and one one to the green should this make the motor run?  If so would taking the wire from the blue to the yellow make themotor run in the other direction?

Joe, I see the barrel car right behind the loco in your picture.  I don't recognize any of the other cars in your photo.  I never could understand why it wouldn't run on the 027 track.  I thought maybe the wheels weren't sitting on the rails to complete the circuit because the 027 profile was lower.

Somewhere on the laminations. You should be able to see somewhere on the motor where one field lead attaches to the motor frame. You need to get power in that end of the field.  If this loco has not run for a long time, you should remove the motor from the truck, one screw on the bottom, and clean out all the old grease and regrease it. The old grease can get so hard that the motor can not turn.
