Yeah, wheels and rollers are clean. When I say it stalls after I fell asleep, I mean I woke up about 5 HOURS later and the train had staled, so I don't really know why or how it happened.  Its possible I just have some dirty track, as I'm running on carpet with old O-27 track.  I currently have 6 locomotives, one is for sale so I'm not running it, my Reading T-1 looks ridiculous going around an O-42 circle on the floor, 2 are partially disassembled for conversion to more accurate models of Reading prototypes, and I have a set of K-Line PRR Alco FAs that I only keep because they were the first train my dad bought me as a kid.  So right now the 2025 is the workhorse of my Carpet Central, and it's relative indestructability is why I wanted one.

I had a similar problem with one of my 2025s, although what happened in my case could happen to any engine.  It ran for awhile, and then limped to a stop. After a cool down or reversing, it might run again for awhile. It turns out that the engine had been run on track that had been cleaned with steel wool. Believe it or not, it wasn’t that obvious. I used Q-tips to clean every reachable surface and toothpicks to clean out every tooth of every gear. I got marked improvement, but after a day or two the same symptoms returned. I had to repeat the process twice more before all the dregs of the steel wool were finally  purged, but after that  it performed consistently. That was ten years ago and it still runs well today. I don’t know if this is your problem, but it might be worth a try.
