I am in the process of cleaning up a postwar Lionel 248 2-4-2 steam engine.

According to one of the books I have, it came in an uncataloged  set in 1958 that came with "O" gauge track.
I don't think I have any reference material that would tell what was included.
Can anybody tell me what came with it?

I only have the engine.
As I wrote above, it is a 2-4-2, with no smoke, light or whistle. It has a 2 position reversing unit.
It has an open frame motor, and ballast weights under the back of the cab, and mounted under the front truck plate.

I took a look at the first few pages of the Lionel advanced 58 and 59 catalogs.  Sometimes they would show entry level sets but no luck.  Sorry.

Thank you all for the assistance.

I purchased the 248 locomotive in a box of trains last summer at an outdoor antique show.  The track was rusty and the cars were very beat. Even the transformer was beat up. But somehow the engine escaped any real damage and was just dirty. It probably didn't help that it rained the day before and the box of trains got wet.
The only piece I held onto was the engine. The cars WTJohn lists seem familiar, at least some of them were in the lot. I guess I should have noted the cars before getting rid of them. At the time it seemed like it couldn't possibly be a set due to the "O" gauge track.

I am positive I have a tender for it.

WTJOHN got the set number correct as X-610NAA (1958 issue).  Greenberg Guide to Uncataloged Sets, page77. The complete list of contents:

248 steam locomotive, 1130T streamline tender, 6014 Bosco boxcar, (6121) flatcar with pipes, 6476 red Lehigh Valley hopper, (6111) flatcar with logs, 6112 black gondola with canisters, 6017 SP-type caboose, Boxed 310 Billboard set, 957 Plasticville farm building and animal set, 14 curved, 3 straight, 2 half curve, 45 degree crossing, UCS, 1015 transformer.   All rolling stock came with the early AAR trucks and combination of regular and rounded axles.

Pay particular attention to the NAA suffix; instead of the customary 027 track, this set came with 0 gauge track, and is one of the first known to include a Plasticville accessory.  (Other set to include Plasticville was X-619)

I bought a 246 Scout as my first loco when I got back into Lionel trains last year. I know it is not exactly the same but I did fine the service manual on-line and have attached it here. 2015-02-08 20.03.24

Thank you for the additional information!

I have a fair number of books on Lionel, but I don't think I have Greenberg's guide to uncataloged sets. If I do, its not in the right place.

Thanks for the materials on the 246.

The motors in the 246 and the 248 are completely different.

The 248 has  open frame motor with metal sides, a separate e-unit, and is very easily serviced.
The 246 has a scout motor which is closed, has an integral e-unit, and a plastic housing.
