A friend uncovered an engine that had been given to her Dad as a boy. It’s estimated that it’s about 90 years old. The number on the front is 1681 and on the underside is a plate with “Lionel Junior”. Can anyone provide some insights?

You may want to post this in the tinplate section of the forum.
That group is more knowlegable about prewar trains.
I think somebody asked a similar question there, so you might find it scrolling down through the messages.
Your set was one of the more inexpensive sets. They were played with pretty hard so there are not many survivors.
